For anyone interested, these are the other bearings. So ya, copper showing. Im lucky. If you have an M3 or M6 and are close to or over 100,000km. Do the bearing job. Cost should be approx R40k using OEM parts.

Not sure where you're based Nish... I got a R25k quote from TuneTech earlier this year... Mine's on 81xxx.

Thinking of sending it in next month, then rest assured.

Bearings really aren't that bad at all. I'm sure you feel a million times better now.

Hi - R25k sounds right. But I'm putting in a new oil pump & chain also (+/- R10k). So im just being careful here.

Well caught bud. I'm assuming you at the reef and not the coast?

Let this be a lesson to all the guys putting off a bearing job on their cars...

Unfortunately our crappy fuel and high compression motors causes the upper bearing wear... pre-detonation is a killer!

Is this a routine thing for "M" cars or does it apply to all?

Mainly M Car's bru, where Octane Levels + Fuel Quality + Pre-Detonation takes place...

not to say it does not happen on other Petrol NA BMW Motors, but the issue pertains about 70% towards ///M Cars... E46 Upwards ( keeping in Mind NA )

If pre-detonation is the cause of bearing wear, surely the lower bearings would show more wear than the upper bearings?

I say this as the pre-detonation and/or knocking would occur at the time that the piston is still on the upward compression stroke (BTDC), and would force the piston down, while it is moving up. This would then lead to stress and damage on the lower bearings and not the uppers as per the posted pics.

Ok nevermind, the above proves that detonation is the cause of the uppers wearing.
