Bearing knock.... hang on just a second.

Over the past 2-3 weeks my car developed what I first thought was a noisy lifter. This noise then changed to a much lower thudding type of metal knock which I isolated to the lower rear exhaust side of the engine.

I was already doing all my calculations on what parts where needed and all the work involved with replacing the main and rod bearings, when I decided to google the symptoms yesterday. Someone in the states described almost exactly what I was hearing and said that his mechanic diagnosed it as a loose spark plug.

Not knowing what the condition of my plugs was anyway, I bought new plugs yesterday and changed the plugs last night.

Low and behold, the plug in cylinder number 5 was so loose that I turned it out with only the plug socket and extension, didnt have to crack the seal or anything.

Put the new plugs in and torqued them to spec, and guess what.... My bearing knock is completely gone, engine running smooth as silk again :joy:

Now as awesome as this is, this still begs the question: How does the spark plug come loose in the first place.

I can only assume that the plugs where never put in correctly to begin with, and that it maybe vibrated loose?

That must be it, well at least you know what to look out for.

I am glad you got your "bearing knock" sorted so cheaply

You have no idea the relief I felt when I started the car last night and it was all back to normal.

I can only imagine, have been in a similar situation with my car where I thought something was badly wrong and it turned out to be not so bad.
