Battery Replacement & Jump starting E82 125i

Hi guys,
I need some help? First time owner of BMW so still getting to know more about it, specifically the one I own, an E82 125i.

So my battery died and i thought I could just replace it but based on some of the research I have done, it would seem I need to code the car as well? Can anyone help me understand how this works? Do I have to buy the battery directly from BMW so that they can code it?

Since the car does not want to start, I would need to jump start it so I could get the battery replaced. I also researched this and apparently it’s not good to jump start directly from the battery? You have to jump start it from terminals located at the front? Can anyone shed some light on this too?

Any advice or help will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Lew

You can buy a battery from BMW and they will code the battery for you(not sure if there is a cost for it)
You could also get a aftermarket battery and get that registered to the car.

You code the battery to the car to register a new battery(be it same size or bigger) and also so the alternator can adjust the charging rate so that it doesnt charge the new battery the same way the old battery was being charged.

By not doing the above you will be causing damage to the new battery and thus it will not last you as long as it could,by not coding you are decreasing the lifespan of the battery

If your in JHB i can assist you with the coding if you want

Thank you so much for this detail, now it makes much more sense to me. I’m based in Roodepoort so if you can help with coding, I would certainly appreciate it?

I will call BMW tomorrow to check on pricing for the battery.

Do you know anything about jump starting? Can I jump start directly from the battery in the boot?

Im based in Edenvale.
BMW price on the battery is 3100 round about for the white battery. Your car should have the white battery.
If you call ABM and give them your forum name they will give you the forum discount

As for jump starting, its not recommended but can be done if its quick (iE car starts immediately) and using the front terminals
I would recommend you rather use a battery charger either on the front terminals or by removing it and charging the battery elsewhere

You can jump start the car, not directly on the battery though. It is recommended that you jump start on the terminals provided in the hood.
