Automatic Transmission Fluid - Help!

I think my ATF is a bit low so I have tried to find out what stuff to buy so that I can top it up a bit. I have tried the drivers handbook - no help. I have Googled it on the web and just ended up even more confused. I went to BMW Servicing people but they blinded me with science and told me I should take it in and let them do it! I don't want pay 100's just to top the stuff up!

As I understand it there are two types LA 2634 and LT 71141. How do I find out which to use? Does it matter? Can they be mixed? Any ideas?

Hi Bob,

It does matter yes, there is a sticker on your gearbox (either green or organge???) which specifies what oil to use.

If it is the LA 2632 stuff, be prepared to walk funny for a long time, as that stuff is stupid expensive..

We have found a suitable replacement for the LA 2632, tried and tested being the Shell Donax TX. Its R50 per 500ml as apposed to the R1200+ BMW wants for 5 litres, so its half the price. Also good for power steering funny enough.

I would assume you are using the 5HP30 gearbox ?

Thanks, Zaleonardz, I think I will have to get underneath and find some answers and check out the colour codes...
