Auto Stop/Start impact on 2.0d motor

I know that this topic relates to a lot of personal opinions but you guys should go bisit Munich and see those taxis that are over 600k km and stop start at every intersection or stop, speaking to the drivers they will tell you that those cars run without any problem. The starters and engines were designed to stop at a stage were it does not take much to start, so the strain is actually minimal if the design was made to do it.

Each to his own though, i cannot say that I enjoy it either...

battery replacement? moms merc needed replacement after two years & merc said thats normal

I see some guys talking about auto/start stop and I remembered seeing this Engineering explained video. I think the system is annoying but it saves a fair amount of fuel in heavy stop/go traffic.

I think this settles the Discussion

I cant imagine this is good for the engine when cold.

It's only supposed to work when it's reached operating temperatures.

It doesn't tho?

The F25 has an oil temp gauge, and I have noticed on many occasions the car is still cold, and it switches off.

Cant be good for the car. :thumbdo:

I’m going on the assumption that all our concerns were taken into account during R&D by the manufacturer before taking a decision to use this technology.

I’m not sure how much fuel it saves if any, but it ‘probably’ doesn’t harm the engine.

The same R&D that BMW says gearbox oil is "lifetime oil"

Lifetime for BMW means 5 years or 100 000km.

I have a 320d, and leave the auto start on and off on.
When u push your car, and reach a robot, it doesnt turn off, esp if youve used launch control, or sometimes just go foot down from robot to robot on a warm day
They obviously have to redesign a starter to cope with all the start and stops, and naturally i would like to think the engineering team would have setup failsafe against turning off the car when hot

Hi All,

Apologies if this topic has been discussed before.

As this is my first tractor, I am concerned with the impact that frequent auto stop/start has on the diesel motor.

Old school turbo thinking is to always cool down your turbo for a minute before switching off.

I know that some may say that the CPU is smart enough to know when to momentarily disable the stop/start feature, if the motor/turbo is too hot.

However, we all know that modern German cars are built to only truly last 7 years/200,000km (the maximum extension allowed on Motorplan), so the tolerances on mechanical longevity are not as tight as those on your Japanese vehicles. As a case in point, my CX5 petrol seems to be reluctant to auto stop/start itself, unless the conditions are just perfect (it seems to also be impacted by the weather!).

So, what do other BMW diesel owners do, in particular, those with auto stop/start features? Is it better to just switch this feature off every time you start the car and forgo the incremental fuel saving benefit for peace of mind of mechanical longevity?
I guess if you replace your car every 5 years or less, then this would matter less to you.

There are actually many videos on youtube that even visually show you how much fuel u save from start stop. it is all dependent on how long u stop for and the power of the engine. From what a saw, a typical 1.4l petrol engine engine will save petrol if you stop for 6 seconds or more, with less time needed to save fuel if u have a more powerful engine

Hi guys, can anyone refer me to someone in Durban that can code it out for me? First thing I do when I start is engage Eco Pro and disable the stop start. Currently average 5.8L/100km. Thanks

Watch YouTube video where they do a comparison and it clearly proves the feature actually harms the starter. Over and above the harsh start up annoys people, myself included. I disabled the feature but realized if I’m in traffic and put the car in park the engine switches off and starts again when placed in drive.

Search for "BMW/Mini Auto Start stop" on gumtree

Sorry to slightly derail this but do Stop/Start engines or cars fitted with this Stop/Start technology use different spark plugs?

I know the battery is different and handsomely expensive even the trickle charger.

Interesting...
I think we are skeptical due to the extra load on these wearing parts (battery, starter, turbo). And understandably, owners of these cars that want to keep them longer than the warranty period and want to look after them very well because these parts may wear out much quicker than normal.

Nevermind... should have read the whole thread

Coded mine to remember last setting so if i turn it off it stays off until i press the button to activate it again.

Hi Bud

Who did the coding for you.
I recently got an F30 and I find that having to disengage it on each start up quite tiring.

My F10 now needs me to push lever back into drive after that Stop/Start function thing switches of the car. It's irritating. The car tells me that it won't drive after the engine has stopped & that i must drive moderately to the nearest BM.
