Hi all

for awhile now ive had ATF leaking and always though it was coming from a pipe and ive been too busy with work to go check underneath but finally i have gone underneath and all i can fine a leak from this the ribbed rubber boot. On closer inspection i found a little whole in the boot where the fluid is coming from. now my question is should there be fuild in this boot? if not where is this leaking coming from?

The car is a E36 232i 98'

any help would be greatly appreciated.

The ATF reservoir is above the boot you describe...
The pipes at the bottom of the reservoir usually leak, as they age...
Check this first....

Agreed. Depending on age thats where I will check first, then I`ll check thethe filler cap.

and if the boot is external soaked, but internally dry, then it isn't the steering rack, but probably then from up above, be it the pipe at the bottom or the filler cap.

however

if the boot is soaked on the inside, with seepage to the outside, then it is more than likely the steering rack itself.
