good day all,

please bear with me I am not sure at this stage what the problem could be as this just happened on my way to work. I drive a 320i e46 steptronic, I was pulling off from a stop sign when I heard a slight (((Gooof))) sound, what followed was a sound of metal screeching together, almost like brake pad touching the Disc. Very loud sound, i drove the car for about 10kms and the sound started becoming better as I took corners and bends it became more quite but every now and again i would hear that screeech...

Any ideas on what this could be, I will be able to jack up the car sometime after lunch here at work to see if there is anything visible.

Strange...exhaust, under covers, bumper...could be anything that may have come loose. Check tools and stuff lying in the boot and spare wheel...:dunno:

well on friday i took off from still position and something went "CLUNK" and it kept on going clunk, clunk as the back wheels turned.... Got the car towed to work since it was after 5pm, had a mech check it yesterday he confirms that it is the diff... Now my knowledge on diffs is very minimal at this stage so I would like some assistance. I am not sure what is creating that noise in the diff but feels like when propshaft is turning and the car is in gear something is not connecting inside.

what is better to get it fixed or to get a new diff and what does it cost?

Best to have the diff checked by a beemer specialist

Well buddy if your diff is kaput then i got one here which is a 3.38 ratio e46 320 diff.

auto is 3.46... its normally cheaper to get a second hand diff then fix...

Guys if I am not mistaken the ratio is the number far right - this is the sticker thats on my diff - i dont know much about ratios and what they are actually for

if you look inside u start seeing the problem - all the teeth are broken on that inside propeller that connects to prop shaft

when you turn this - thats where i was getting the noise from - so my guess is one of the teeth probably broke and as i drove to a safe place the rest broke off...

speeddemon I may take u on that offer if the ratio thing doesnt make a difference - but u in cpt?
So who else has a diff - i really need one now!!!!

Hey man, sorry to hear this... looks nasty! I sold my diff to speeddemon, but it apparently doesnt fit his car, like he said earlier, its a 3.38
