In the Polo that I used, the torch did not stick out more than 5 mm.

Is your torch protruding or are you just happy to see me?! :sneaky:

I actually want to get one of these for each of the cars, so in the E46 I am also curious to know if it fits such that the lid can close. In the E90 it can live in the armrest bin when there is a spare charging point...

It would also annoy me if it protrudes. My spare port is used for my cell charger. It better fit in the front with the cover closed.

Does anyone know if it has to be in the charger permanently or does it maintain its charge well?

you will not be able close the ashtray door on e46 with this, which of course would be extremely annoying, and I would be able to live with it for around 1 minute :)

too far for e46

did you try it in your car? i measured using the total length they say it is and it really does seem it will come down to mm

I eyeballed next to the original cigarette lighter. it is close to triple the height above the "base"

It holds the charge very well. You dont have to leave it in the sigarette lighter...thats just for charging. If you use the flashlight often then you need to charge it often but it also charges quickly. By the time you get to work it will be fully charge...depending on your distance. :=):

keeping it in the charger is for charging & convenience...a cool place to store it so you dont forget where you placed it when needed.
