I read somewhere that there was a very large number produced.....not sure what the actual number is, but from speaking over the years with lots of ex BMW factory staff, the 'iS' was one of BMW's historic sales items, everyone wanted them then.....and now!!! but as you say, it's a pity that many, many idiots destroyed these magic vehicles around every corner and in many a back yard garrage, so need to do your homework before getting into buying!!
As all these cars were fitted with ALPINA cams, best would be to strip the tappet cover and check on any potential car, claimed to be 'iS' for that 'mythical' stamped mark
raise: there are other tell tale sighns, like EVOI aluminium bonnet, fenders and doors, you'll feel the bonnet a mile a way from it being so light!! then 'metal' airbox on the EVOII versus all the other E30's post 1990 had plastic airboxes.....but the 'skelms' have also picked up on this and if they want to sell you an imitation, they would just install a chrome bumper airbox....and if you do not have an actual 'iS' airbox with you, highly unlikely that you will be able to tell if it's a fake when installed on the car....then other things such as the 'throttle body' on the EVOII has a much larger diameter than even the EVOI and that you can see just by looking at the bulk of the actual housing......my two cents worth
