Andy took possession of the vehicle yesterday afternoon.

He should reach home sometime during the course of today.

From my side though, it was a sad farewell to a really awesome machine

So we just had to stop at camps bay. It's just a thing I have to do. I haven't been to CT unless I've been to victoria road.

Dad and I had lunch/dinner there after collecting the car from Auric BMW and Ish.

The more I look at the car and drive it the more it's growing on me. It drives unlike anything I've ever experienced. The 330d and it's sport suspension feels like a merc now :fencelook: and the steering on the 330d feels like steering a ship with a rudder.

The wheel on the Z4M is so chunky! I recall commenting that the 350z's wheel was skinny compared to the 330d 3spke wheel and now it's the same coming from the Z4.

Best way to describe it is like steering a missile. The car has so much feel and connected-ness to the road it's unreal. Feels like a track car on the road. There's not much give in way of suspension. Going over bumps you can see the car rides it like a plank, ox wagon like, but at the same time doesn't snap your spine. I don't mind it but for a 60yr old it might be too much.

The sound is so much more addictive than I first thought. Where the M3 sounds raspy the Z4 sounds Rawtier, if that word could be used as a sound. And best of all it sounds like that from 2000rpm and stock boxes :)

The gearing also feels shorter. Don't know what the ratio's are but sitting at +- 120km/h gps you're doing 3000rpm.

Economy was worse than anticipated. averaging 10km/L (varying between 9.8-10.2) for the whole 1480km drive up. Possibly due to the uphill drive and shorter ratio's and the last bit of a push from Bloemfontein home. This was cruising at 128km/h GPS speed giving leeway up to 130 on the downhills.

The roadworks are still a PITA and caused at least an hour delay on the whole trip. We probably stopped and shutdown 4-5times where the other times we just approached and waited less than 5 mins before driving on.

Road blocks galore! barely 1 hour out of cape town and we were pulled over for a routine inspection. This was around 9am and I was asked to do a breathalyser whilst sitting in the car.

Just to add, I had the GPS suction cup mounted on the driver side window with my digital facing forward, so I never really wound the window down all the way while speaking to the cops.

The second road block was real funny.

Sticking to the speed limits (as I don't want a repeat of last time) camera rolling and gps tracking everything we get flagged down once again. Must be a bmw thing

First comment out of his mouth, Yoh you have a fast car there boet! (all in capey afrikaans but will translate for convenience)

We caught you doing 167km/h back there ne?

I said no sir, I was doing 128 exactly as my gps shows and I have it on camera. He insisted saying we have the reading on the radar camera and I can show you.

Go ahead and write me a ticket then, he then started asking about the camera and I said it's just a regular digital and I'm making a road trip video. Also I'm nursing the car as it's still new to me and not taking any chances.

He then cheered up and started cracking jokes about how fast the car can go and I should give it some stick when I leave so they can see how it goes.

We all laughed and I sped up a little up to 80km/h and then engaged the CC again. Not even 1km later there was a lady under a tree with a camera trapping

Next story on another post...

Next Story,

After the chancer of a cop we saw a little Atos far ahead of us. Knowing we going to overtake it soon I start planning the move.

Next thing I see another road bloack and the big mamma jumped out in front of the atos signalling to pull over. Atos gets closer and closer until right in front of her and then swerves out and carries on driving. Almost like a delayed reaction. This was very funny and both surprising, yet he was not attempting a get away. Only doing like 80-100 in a 120 zone.

Next thing big mamma wobbles hurriedly over to her car and radio's in the incident and then proceeds to jump in to start, what can be called a hot pursuit of sorts.

We pass the comotion and decided to get in front of the atos as things are gonna get real nasty for that dude real quick.

And true as bob, we stayed in front and slowed down to see the outcome and there ended up being two metro cars in pursuit behind the atos, flashing and going ape. Oblivious to this all the atos remains unphased and carries plodding along.

I was expecting a scenario where the one patrol car goes upfront and sandwich the suspect in to a halt but no, they just carry on for about 2km and then eventually they all pull over.

I would've loved to stay behind and see the sports that unfolded thereafter but home was calling too strongly.

Many km's and roadworks and roadblocks later we reach bloem and search for another refill point. Thus far no fuel shortages was experienced and 95 at all the pumps.

At the caltex/maxis we pull in over the highway and had a burger but no fuel. Next stop kroonstad at 100 odd km and range showing 140 odd km we didn't want to chance it and pulled in at winburg. Small to say the least.

First garage we eventually find only has 93, carry on searching nothing until we find a BP but also only 93 :argh: Anyway car still has 93 in the tank, we push on.

This is when I get the call to do a flight to durban at midnight. Current time was around 8-0830 pm. I volunteered as I need every bit of money to properly take care of the 2 cars and afford the fuel bill :)

So our last 'rustige' stretch home turned into a run against the clock.

GPS was showing 23:05 which in the end turned out to be 22:24 at the gates. But that last stretch of road is treacherous. I really didn't enjoy that road at night with no lighting and all the trucks on the single lane. Frequently splitting to 2 lanes though.

I won't say the speeds we were doing, but where we should've arrived with 1/2 to 2/3 tank at home we ended up with 1/4 tank.

There was a white 2.0fsi jetta that seemed like it wanted to play along in overtaking as many trucks in a 2 lane stretch but it was funny how the Beemer would run away from it.

I ended up doing the flight, after dropping dad at home and getting ready. Took off at 2am landed at 0250 in king shaka, waited for the first flight back to JHB at 0600 and landed back in Jozi at 7am. Got to my car at 0830 and home by 0915 today. Slept till 2pm and here we are :)

Speed limits.

Especially western cape and north cape. They are ANAL on all the signed speeds. If it says 60 do 60, 80 do 80. Don't wait slow down right away.

The people have nothing to do there, I'm not just saying that, my dad asked each and every time we stopped "what do you people do here?" And the answer was either, "niks nie meneer" or "ons drink net meneer"

There are fixed cameras in the small towns, richmond, colesburg etc.. And try the camera thing like I did. I'm sure those cops will try pull you with a fast one for a quick buck. Tell them to write a ticket, they won't.

Once in the freestate I didn't notice a sinlge cop or speed trap. Might just've been lucky. Or too tired to notice

And then once in GP be sure that there will be hidden cops with cameras. I just saw one on the N1 right after new road under by olifants, under the bridge, in his dark camo and camera.

Don't stress about the flight, you'll be fine
