Alpina 635csi Identification and Specs

Alpina never built RHD cars themselves. Synters BMW in the UK were appointed as recognised Alpina "Converters" by Alpina, and converted all RHD drive cars to Alpina spec.

As your car is RHD and was obviously imported, I would email them with your VIN number and see if they have any records on your car. If not, it will more than likely not be an Alpina car.

Nice car by the way. Would look very nice parked next to mine in MY garage :fencelook:

Howzit. Thanks everyone for the comment and help. Do know I appreciate it very much.

Well, this is becoming a threat about updates on the restoration. Well, good with me. The car went in for it's upholstery, and boy, am I excited. The upholsterer got the genuine product all the way from Durbs. Black leather, and it will have some red stitching, as will the steering wheel. All the seats are being done, should be finished by Wednesday. Thereafter it will go for rear shocks. Unfortunately Bilstein did not come to the party, but Supa Quick did, with some Gabriels. Hope the shocks will be OK though, is there a hell of a difference between them and Bilsteins? Does the Bilstein last longer or what?

I will definitely post some pics when the job is done. I'm not going to do the rooflining though, at least not for now.

Hi. I got the car back after the upholstery job, and it looks great, apart from the steering which is a total mess. The owner of the upholsterers apologised profusely, and I'm taking the steering back on Monday to have it redone. The steering was done during the evening in order to meet the deadline, and you can see it, believe me.

But the rest of the car came out beautifully. I'm attaching some photos I took, hope you can make out something. Red stitching was used, and I think it was the correct choice.

Lastly, does the car have only one fusebox? I spoke to an auto electrician about my flickers not working, except when I switch on the hazard switch, and he told me one of my fuses is blown, though I see nothing wrong with the fuses? Is there a fusebox layout I can get somewhere to tell me what fuse comes where? I have searched the net, and Google was not my friend.

Definitely some odd going on there!!

By the looks of the engine you have an M30B34, pretty much the best inline 6 BMW ever made and better than the M90 you would expect in the car of that age.

Also, you have the rear bumper strap of the E24/2, not the rounded bum of the E24/1 which your car appears to be...

Maybe you have a cross over hybrid? Have you had a chance to call Sytners?
They keep logs of all the Alpinas they have converted.

Either way, you have the best engine, which even standard goes like stink. It has better cams, slightly higher which may account for the lumpy sound.

I have an Alpina B10 cam in my 6 and it is a little lumpy. My car had some work done by Sytners in the UK, mostly cosmetics (Wooden gear lever, wheels, steering wheel) I'm not too keep on the Alpina stuff (I know, I know)
So if you want to talk about the steering wheel and wheels let me know.
The gear lever was stolen, the one part i liked!!

Here is my thread for info.

Your car is looking mean! :)

Hell Rick, thanks, and thanks to everyone. You guys are motivating me so much with your wonderful comments.

I'm going to mail Sytners tomorrow, and get the ball rolling on getting some history and more info on the car.

And yes Rick, I am very much interested in the Alpina goodies. Will pm you.

Hey Rick, on your comment: The aerial apparently also does not sit in the position it "has" to be, according to "Clownshoe's" post earlier, which makes sense. Now, the aerial was not an afterfit. I checked carefully, and everything leads me to believe the car was manufactured with the aerial in its position as is, on the rear next to the bootlid. Thus I am with you on the "hybrid" thing, as the car was manufactured in December of 81, and registered in January of 82. Hell, I hope I will be successful in getting the history on it.

Hi ColdFusion, thanks, and yes it is absolute fun. But check my post on "Skanks" thread, and see what the cost does to your eyes...

Like I mentioned, every penny spent is worth it. Guys, never forget, if you have a passion, LIVE IT! Tomorrow we may die, and why then leave this earth unfulfilled? It's your living of your passions that contributes to life being worth it. Forget about what is in now, or what is not according to the powers that be. To get stuck in the mainstream of society becoming clones of generalized expectations, is to deny your individuality and the living of your dreams. We have enough troubles and stress as it is, thus spend your hard earned where your heart lies. Its a fulfilment only you will appreciate. I've waited for this "six" for many years, and never gave up. If my time may be tomorrow, I will leave with a big smile on my face...

Well I mailed Skank, and put a reply on his site where he advertises the Alpina wheels, accepting his deal. Hopefully I can take delivery of the mags, and then... a photo or two for you. The wheels will look stunning on the black car I think. Now its waiting for his reply...

Thanks 444yyy, I do not know whether the local agents gave me the info on the build date (December 81), but your information helps a lot already. Obviously somebody got their information wrong. Thanks very much.

I have mailed Sytner in Britian, hopefully they can help, as the Alpina website does not have a link for general enquiries (at least which I could not see). The moment I get some real information, I will post. Thank you again everybody for the help and suggestions.

Well, after a very uncomfortable wait because of couriers that does not know they are actually in the business of rendering a damn service (cockups and delays), I received them... the wheels.

Me and Skank agreed on a deal, and this morning I picked them up from DHL, went straight to Tiger, and the guys there were more enthusiastic to get them on the car than I were! Nearly everybody got involved, checking out the wheels, how the caps work, checking body clearance... you name it. The BM was the "Royalty Arrived". The upholstery troubles were sorted out yesterday, so everything was just tip top.

But... the existing tyres that hadn't done 2000 kms were not to fit, NO WAY... they did not fit... Now I do not need to tell anybody what a set of shoes cost for a car, and my heart literally slipped out my rearside into the depths of the planet, taking half my blood supply with. Yes, I did not budget at all for this, obviously not thinking clear when you just HAVE to get those Alpinas. My choice? Wait forever until I need to replace the tyres, or drive off with the Alpinas. Yup, you guest correct...

And thar she blows: So what do you think? (needless to say the car picked up a few unnecessary kms today, and tomorrow the winding roads of Sabie, Graskop and Hazyview will be tested yet again... how can I ignore such a gracious invitation?). And a small, teeny weeny little note for our dear readers contemplating restoring these old girls... IT IS EXPEEEENNSIIIVVVEEEE... sigh..

Another one:

And to be fair, DHL wasn't the ones to cockup. Their service was fantastic, though at a price...

hi Marius,

car is looking good. what tyres size and price did you have to fit?

the rears had 265/40/17 on which were eyewateringly expensive. I dropped to 255 and the price was only 1800 for some decent Falken.
Rick.

Hi Rick, Been busy with year end auditing, apologies for not responding earlier. I fitted 255's at rear, Conties, and cost me just over 2 grand per tyre, after discount. I know the guy at Tiger and he helped me out as much as he could.

I think I priced 265 Michelins at R5000. Almost covered my keyboard in coffee. :thumbdo:

I have had my rear lights (waiting for arrival) upgraded massively, extra highpower bulbs, silvering work etc. I might have a spare set, if I do I'll advertise them on here for sale first. My car stops bloody quickly, people behind me need to know!!
