Alfa, the sacrifice

Picked the Alfa up yesterday. One trip so far, Weltervreden Park to Centurion. Got caught in some bumper to bumper traffic on the N1, but gave me an idea to see how this whole hybrid setup performs.

Car can run in electric mode till 20km/h and is ideal for those bad stop/start traffic situations. This car should give me at least double the mileage on a tank compared to the RS4, which is a good benefit but not the primary reason I made the change.

Initial impressions are good, comfortable, loaded with every specification one could want, and decent power for highway driving. Takes a while to get to speed, but is much better once on the move.

Will provide updates as I do more mileage and figure out a few more things about the car.

I went for the Speciale model, which is a limited run available during the launch phase.

Specification includes:

Matrix LED head lamps
Adaptive cruise control
Heated and ventilated seats
Blind sport monitoring and full safety anti collision suite of features
Harmon Kardon sound
Electric tailgate
Etc.

Congrats bro. One thing about having an Alfa is that you will never tire of looking at the design and finding little nuances that are lost on most manufacturers today. Also they tend to look MUCH better in person than (even good-looking) pictures.

I think every petrol head must own an Alfa, Atleast once.

Beautiful car! Congrats! My fifth car was an Alfa 1750 Berlina. Day i got it i filled the tank and drove it untill the tank was empty. That was in 1974. Amazing car!

I see many 2016 GT4s low mileage on autotrader..3.8l..before 4l upgrade..are these decent cars..or should one only consider the 4l examples..

I see many 2016 GT4s low mileage on autotrader..3.8l..before 4l upgrade..are these decent cars..or should one only consider the 4l examples..

The 981 GT4 with the 3.8l engine seems to be the car that’s more driver oriented and from what I’ve been reading and reviews watched, were a bit of a limited run.
The 718 is also quite a great drive and would be the one to choose as it can do the daily duties more comfortably, and is more ‘modern’

There’s normally +/-200k difference in price and for this reason, if I’m shopping only these 2 options, then most likely it would be the 718.

Spent most of the weekend using the Alfa as the primary means of transport.

My thoughts so far:

Car is definitely very comfortable. Even with the 20” wheels and no adaptive dampers (only get these dampers on the Veloce model) ride is very decent. Quite a nice feeling being able to absorb the road imperfections and easily take speed bumps. The 40 profile tyres do help a bit.
Seats are nice and plush providing ample adjustments to get the right driving position, and has 3 memory functions. Useful as my son is starting to do the “take the car out of the garage and driveway” thing now.
Easily connects to either Apply Car Play or Android Auto once you start the car. Can set whose phone is the default/primary one.
Harmon Kardon sound is very good, not as good as the BO in the RS4, but does its job very well.

Rear USB and Type C charger. A must these days for the kids (RS4 did not have these in the rear)
Good boot size; and rear leg room. My mate drove the car yesterday, I took the back seat and was extremely comfortable.
Fuel consumption is around 8.5-9l/100kms. Expected better, but we have been driving the car relatively spiritedly and it has only 5 500kms.
The colour is amazing and just works on the car, does get some attention as it’s a great looking SUV.
One thing we enjoyed on the Audi, was the light show on start up/shut down. The Alfa has somewhat of this, albeit like a version from Wish.
But with those rear lights and light bar illuminated, it does look brilliant.

Lastly, the engine, as mentioned earlier, car is pedestrian to pick up speed especially from a standstill. However once on the move, it’s much better. The more I drive it, I’m getting used on how to get the best from what this car offers.

The car looks tons better than many pics i have seen...that colour (I am biased though with this colour) is insane! Alfa's in this blue just has some perfect balance!
