Hi everyone

so I have my first BMW(2006 e91) for about 2 weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it :=):

Back to the topic.... Does bmw aircons make the car heavy on fuel?

Found this quote which I find to be pretty realistic:

Any load connected to an engine attempts to stall (stop) the engine, so the engine must have ENOUGH energy to sustain itself as well as drive the load. This is where the fuel used by the engine is affected: the consumption goes up!

Practically, let's just say the engine is running at 2000 revolutions per minute (rpm) while the vehicle is doing 40 km/h, then a load (AC) is applied to it. This load (AC) can reduce the engine speed to (let's say) 1900 rpm and cause the vehicle speed to reduce to (let's say) 38km/h. If you want to maintain your vehicle speed at 40 km/h, then you hit the accelerator to SUPPLY more FUEL to be burnt so that the engine can run at 2000 rpm inspite of the load (AC) added.

This is how AC or any other LOAD in a car can cause fuel consumption to shoot up.

I have always stated the above when people refuse to use their aircon in summer and would rather suffer through the heat to "save on fuel". Look at it this way... Most large car makers now make their cars with the aircon as "ON" as standard, and you actually have to push a button named "ECON" or "AC OFF", which then lights up, to tell you the aircon is off. Normally, the button for aircon lights up when you switch the aircon on.

Manufacturers such as Audi and Mercedes have been doing this for over a decade already, showing that you should be using the aircon without stressing over increased fuel consumption. And with good reason. It really won't cost you half a tank of fuel every time you switch the aircon on.

Mine stays on permanently, even through the winter if it gets a bit warm with the sun blazing in. Keeps the gas recirculating too, saving me from more frequent trips to have the gas refilled.

Yes aircons do increase fuel consumption, but on large engines the effect is less. Just something to mention, I do not think BMW built E91 BMW's :)

Of course they did. It's a stationwagon.
