Aircon Compressor Problem

Hi Guys I urgently need help.

My car was towed to Seds dealership in vereeniging south of Johannesburg a BMW 320i Coupe E90 2011. I bought the car three months ago, till this past weekend when it started making a screeetching and humminh noise from the engine compartment, until the Fan belt broke and the car steering wheel became tense.

Long story short;

The dealer ship is now charging me R18000 + just to fix this and they sent a quote to a SAWarranty which is supposedly covering any mechanical faults in my vehicle.

Does it really cost R18000 plust just to fix this because the car was fine all along or are they simply quoting exhorbitant prices because they will claim it at SAWarranty

PS: I'm a first time owner of a bmw and I feel I am being ripped of?

Any advise or is it jusy me

Depends on what broke, if you lucky it is only the fan belt. But with you saying you heard some noise means that a pulley could also be a problem.

Can explain in my case, 2 months ago I had my fan belt climb off 3/4 off the pulley. Also what alerted me to this was a squeezing sound from the engine bay. Long story short, it ended up the tensioner pulley that's spring mechanism was going and due to it not pulling correct the belt will ride on the pulley and move off it. This belt and the tensioner pulley cost me R3000 with small change and I did the DIY on it.

Maybe there is more then just the belt that snapped and ask them what is the noise thing. It could be the aircon pulley, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, alternator pulley etc. Or even a combination of them. Plus you say it snapped, hopefully not damaging things in the process.

I have heared of cases of the x20i motor (I think N46 motor) having their air-con bearing seizing up causing the whole pulley to lock up. Dealers usually replace the entire air-con, but there are guys that open up the compressor and replace the bearing and put a new pulley. It works out much cheaper.

Thank you this was very helpful. They removed the whole component and put in a new one from BMW. Now I am back on the road
