Hi all, I hope someone can help me.

I was in an accident inwhich both passenger and driver airbags deployed. Since then insurance did not pay out and I am stuck with my 2002 E46 318i. So the damage is not that bad body wise however ----- my car wont start. BMW says its a pyro charge that disconnects the positive terminal from the battery and cuts power to the engine - a cable from BMW is R 3000 +++++

Does anyone know or have had this issue and can help me get my car started

Yes, its a big box in the boot on top of the battery. Get one from the scrapyard, try bemows, they might even be able to get a new one for you. If you are really need to move the car, it can be bypassed, but I would not suggest this for a long term solution, as could burn down your car if something goes wrong.

If you look at the battery, the positive terminal is bigger than most other car's, so that is the part giving the problems. Easiest would probably be to replace it with a terminal from midas. But it is also possible that there is a short somewhere in the car, determining that would be your responsibility.

These are in short supply at scrap yards since they deploy along with the first airbag or seat belt pretensioner. We only get one if the car has burnt without any bags deploying. You can dismantle the positive terminal, remove the plastic covering around the area that gets separated by the deployment action and force the two cables together. A simple drill and self tapper will then see you through till you can get a replacement. Some electronics fundis can bypass that section of the airbag system if you want to reset the airbag light without full replacement.
