Air filter

How would a K&N Air Filter benefit my E46 318i? Would it be an improvement as compared to the standard filter? Anybody used this in the 2.0L E46 318i ?

No it wont. Rather stick to the std paper filter, if its good enough for a 330i then a 318i will be fine with it.

cold compressed air is the objective - so in a NA car Mmmm - youd have to be going really fast to get the benefit - I cant really feel it - I dont know anymore - there are probably 2/3 hp gains but thats it

As a matter of interest, the 330i seems like it could benefit from a filter replacement... price on stock E46 paper filters?

I have a K&N in my existing air box in my 330. Benefits... more noticeable induction sound and is guaranteed for a lifetime. Other than that, maybe half a kilowatt.

Ultimately a K&N filter does make a little sense because you will never have to replace it.. so for that reason alone it might worth getting one.

But for power or fuel efficiency?? The margins are very small and the factory equipment is pretty good.

I have K&N’s in all my cars, regardless of my cheeky comments.

Well, I'm a stickler for doing an oil change and replacing the air filter every 12-15000 km on a BMW - 25000 km service intervals are just too far apart for my liking - especially with our generally dusty conditions.

So, assuming there isn't power to be had (which seems to be the general concensus), if nothing else - unless the stock paper filter is something negligible like R80, if you do a lot of mileage, you might benefit from buying a washable K&N or BMC filter simply in the savings to be had from re-using a filter as opposed to buying a new one each time?

Might be worth a look?

And no, they don't kill MAF's, as long as you don't BATHE the filter in oil after washing it - before someone goes jumping on that bandwagon again.

Even that won't work - hence my lack of faith in airfilter for power gains
