Hi guys, this has probably been discussed here alreayd but I would really like to know what u guys think of the prices of parts and labour for ur BMW when purchased and fitted at the agents. I just got quoted R10500 for my e36 prop. :thumbdo:That's almost half what I paid for the car. Maybe some examples?

BMW is expensive.

They have gotten better on the service or high moving items, but the obscure stuff, such as E36 props and stuff.... well lets just say the include KY complimentary with a 30% surcharge in every order.

Case in point, my M5 discs are R2,500 each... 5k for some shaped metal.... WTF..

Some of the stuff is really good value, you could buy for axample two central locking units for a E90 for like R800 a set, which really is not bad..

You better off trying to find a second hand prop and try hard to balance it or hope its balanced already.

Bought mud-flaps for my Wife's E46, paid just over R200 for all four! Cheap!

Bought the black cup-holders and coin-holder tray to replace the original and broken tray with slide, paid about R700 for this! Expensive but not actually as bad as I thought it would be.

Now for the labour, was quoted about R300 to fit these interior bits - had already decided to fit the mud-flaps myself. Reason for wanting them to do this was because I was concerned that I would end up breaking the fragile plastic clips etc. After the quote I decided I would see if I could remove the old part with ease - 10 seconds later had it removed without any hassles or damage. Fitting the new parts took literally another 10 seconds. R300 for THAT!!! Can only imagine what they would have quoted me to the mud-flaps which was quite a bit more work and effort involved.

As mentioned already, things that are generally not in high demand are going to cost a fortune! Example, was quoted about R23k for 17" E92 narrow/wides - then was quoted about R6k for 18" E90 narrow/wides. Reason for price difference, these specific 18" wheels are very popular...

The dealer is unfortunately saddled with a lot of overhead costs , which we have to bear .
Is your car automatic ? Fortunately the auto's do not get used for drags etc. so getting a second hand one with the uj feeling tight may be possible .Just check the length , not sure if they are the same - the 328i and 325i manual are about 20 mm difference , so I will also soon need to have the 328i prop balanced . Balancing will save lots of labour if done correctly .

dont call them stealers for nothing...

the overheads story is a load of crap because you can get the same parts cheaper form the dealers overseas... you want to sell me they have lower overheads?

bmw are not the only ones seems all dealers are crazy on most of their prices...

Dealers are crazy, for the E36 motorsport II rims i was quoted R4K per mag and yet i managed to pick up a set of 4 with tyres for R4K, i was also quoted R64K for a new E36 320i motor, thats more than the value of the entire car!!!!

I wanted the hardtop for my 328i and was quoted R36K...LOL!!!

My uncle lost the locknut key for his motorsport and BMW quoted him R4200...WTF

Certain things are not bad though, like certain service parts for my car, other than that, they rip us off :fishwack:

Yeah its really hit and miss. Some stuff is really cheap and others is crazy. You need to shop around. But e36 M3 2 piece floating discs are about R1500 which I found cheaper then anywhere else for the same quality.

R64000 for a motor, I feel for U. That's a deposit for a house! HAHAHAHA

I mailed BMW SA with tregards to the R10500 propshaft for the E36. Boy, did i give them a piece of my mind. Shit, did I, must have cause I can't remember if I did! LOL.

But anyway, was told it's an old car and the parts have to be manufactured again, it's not a popular item bla bla bla bla, Stock piles ppl!. So in other words, parts are priced according to popularity, parts replacement for a new car is then cheaper? MMMMMMM! So my question is this, and hopefully someone from BMW who has the ability to change the prices will see this is, why on earth does it have to be so exspensive. Surely if the prices are reasonable for the average Joe then BMW, would on a whole be more affordable to drive and maintain. Thus boosting sales of new and used cars as people will no langer be saying things like 'Oh don't buy a BMW it's to exspensive to maintain". Am I wrong or am I just not seeing the missing puzzle piece?

Sigh... Let me take a moment to explain this.

The number one goal of a dealership is to sell cars. Every day of every month this is the focus. When you go to BMW, for the parts price for your E36 and they say R10 000 what they are actually doing is saying "oi mate, put R10 000 into a new 320i and walk out here sophisticated etc etc".

Yes parts and service make up a massive (scary scary) part of the dealerships profits there are huge kick-backs for reaching targets from BMW SA.

Its all indirect sales and the amount of people that come to the parts department when I worked at MINI and ended leaving with a new car after being quoted mad amounts to fix something out of Motorplan were surreal.

So much so that I used to welcome "out of plan" MINI owners in service myself when they bought their car in usually with a MINI on display as when poor Rashaad tells them the service is R8000 or the car needs lower control arms the customers would rather spend the money on a deposit for a new car. We dont care about the bill as we never keep out of plan cars because the dealer itself has to pay those prices too!

Its madness, but we live in a capitalistic world so what do you expect?

Well said Mike and it also makes sense.....

When you book your car in for a service and they ask you what car/model it is and you tell them e36, they give you that look that says "GTFO" ~)

But go there and tell them you looking for a new car and HEY  the salesman is your new bestfriend :)

Its a pity though, because my experience with Mercedes is completely opposite to that of BMW.

PS: R2,623.83 for a control arm :mmm:

It is unfortunately the way dealerships work, and it is horrible because the dealer network and Head Office causes this.

Imagine you have been quoted R12 000 for a power steering pump that is on its way out... You can afford it but your car is 5 years old...

In I walk introducing myself, "oh my thats quite expensive, why dont you rather get a newer MINI? They have new motors now and bodies with no more issues and a 3 year / 75 000km motorplan".

Is that not music to your ears in that situation?

And then I tell the client that we are offering prime-7 and we have a R50 000 trade assistance which she/he can use a discount or to settle their current MINI.

Everyday parts are dirt cheap. R8 for a Main Bulb for a Cooper S, not even Midas can supply a half decent equivelant at that price. Stripes, mirror caps and more are all affordable but anything mechanical and they will push you towards a new car.

In a dealership you get "leads" through the Focus Pro for "service", "Motorplan" expiries and the sales people need to call, pitch a new car or give you a quote for an extension.

Same applies to website queries etc...
