Aftermarket motorplans/Warranties

Hi all. My cab is now out of motorplan and wanted to know if any of you guys are using aftermarket warranties/motorplans and which particular ones you can recommend.

I have used the Hollard Maxi Cruise warranty before but they have skyrocketed their prices in the last 3 years. The cost was 450 a month. Now its like R1100 a month which is ludicrous.

Any recommendations...?

I just wasted 15k for a motor plan extension to 120k now the car has kaked out on 123k and BMW will not assist in any way. Should have saved that money and I would have ended up happier with a broken car.

Beware. SA Warranties do not cover for any oil leak, such as a gearbox oil leak. And should the gearbox fail due to low oil levels, they will not pay out for the gearbox because "you should have known the gearbox was leaking".

I have a Motorite warranty on my car... Never used it though so can't comment on service, but for R4600 for 2 years cover it was a small price to pay to know that it's there if something does go wrong. Note also that they don't cover everything and they have a payout ceiling depending on the part that needs to be covered. You'd have to foot the balance of the bill... I probably won't take it again with my next car, because 1, I'm finding my bm isn't that crazy to maintain on my own and 2, my mech, who is the only person I trust to do mechanical work on my car, is not RMI approved so I won't be covered in any case... I would rather have a rainy day fund should things go wrong...

yes that happens but with a good lawyer you should be able to win that case.

Looks like im going to take a service plan with liquid capital. They give you a 25% discount on BMW services and then amortise it over a 2 or 3 service interval period. Thats R450 a month. Then Ill probably take a mechanical warranty for about R350pm to cover brakes, clutches etc. So for about 800 a month or 10 000 a year you have some decent cover. Still better than forking out 18 grand for a 12 month BMW motorplan extension. The only think I kak myself for is a gearbox issue. you can be in for 100k. But I guess you could go the repair route. I know RDG do great repair work on gearboxes.

Will cost you more than fixing the gearbox yourself.

If you going to fork out 10k on those plans do yourself a favor and pay the 8k more and rather extend with BMW, the cover you will receive cannot be compared with any aftermarket plan. Chat to them and ask them to work it I to your finance if upfront cash is an issue.

8k goes in a flash when it comes to vehicle repairs.

BMW's Motorplan cover is incredibly comprehensive. Yes, expensive it is but at least you will not be scratching your head and/or paying through your ass when shit hits the fan. Just an example on some of my previous cars....N54135i clutch+flywheel+labour = R32k, N55 Complete VANOS = R28k, N55 waterpump = R6k, etc, etc.

Piece of mind

I Really think depends on the car you drive.
I took out a 2 year Warranty with SA Warranties, paid+/- R8000 for it and didn't make any use of it.

With regard to extending motorplan, I think another big advantage is in-house repairs at a BMW dealership.
with after market warranty you will have to shop around for an RMI approved repairer that will take on a specific type of work within your budget cap per part. eg: the warranty I had with SA warranty would pay me out a maximum of R5000 for a complete clutch, anything over I would I have to pay myself.

I have no faith in motorplan. My lower assemble of the engine was replaced and now an Rxi will eat me for lunch think a polo 1.4 as well as it is down on power and BMW are telling me it is a 320i that is why it is so pap. Bull if you ask me as I drove the car before they worked on it for two years.

If it's a E90 320i then any car should leave you looking for parking

Most aftermarket warranties do not cover consequential damage, so for example if your head gasket goes then they pay for that only and not the cracked head and consequential damage.

An aftermarket warranty I was offered with my last purchase would have cost R12 000 for two years and unlimited kilometers. The maximum covered on any claim was R24 000. The helpful finance people offered to add it into the finance package. The numbers just did not work for me so I did not take up the kind offer. So far the car has only needed wiper blades and light bulbs.
