After years of waiting I can finally say I'm a proud BMW owner!

If the M54 is anything like the M57 in my car, there are 2 rubber O Rings on the dipstick so it makes quite a tight seal

I imagine they would be similar

Will check oil tomorrow morning.

VW's are easy by comparison...they don't bother with such things :p

Yep, the dipstick requires quite a firm pull to remove. One thing that I have noticed with a few BMW dipsticks is that the plastic like material tends to become brittle as it gets older, and probably from the heat. Usually the min and max notches, the thinner parts tend to almost chip off. Noticed this with my Wife's E46 and ended up chipping off the remaining pieces with my finger nail - rather that than it break off later and end up in the oil...

Philip, the garage just told me it's coming from the oil filter gasket...they also just told me that my door lock is fine and that the door actuator needs to be replaced :bangdesk::bangdesk:

The car has just been serviced too. Really I don't get it why they don't replace the oil filter gasket when they change the filter

For the filter housing gasket, this is the gasket that goes between the engine filter housing and the block - common place to develop a leak over time. My personal theory is that when they loosen or tighten the oil filter cap there is a chance that it can weaken the gasket seal.

If you want to DIY and have the basic tool, I posted this, E46 320i (M54B22) Oil Filter Housing Gasket DIY last year.

Sorry to hear about the door lock issue!!

Thanks Philip! I'll check it out. If the skies don't open up today I might fit my GP plates

I had to get the tappet cover gasket, sump gasket and breather pipe replaced. The parts used were not OEM but the mech swears by them.

I had my work done at No Problem Auto in Centurion, they specialise in BMW though they will work on anything. Cost R2817.

I didn't have the tools or time to do it myself but I'm glad tried them out. We'll see how it goes and if there are no problems I'll definitely use them again.

And thanks! I love this car to bits. Coming up to 112k km now.

Chaps, yesterday I drove a 2000 E46 330i 5-speed manual around the block.

HOLY **** it was BRUTAL

I still love my car, but seriously, wow. What a guttural engine - it has such an immense GROWL!

This car seemed a little odd for me since it was a pre-facelift 330i. I'm guessing they still had pre-facelift body panels available when the M54B30 engines came in and they just dropped them in.

Nevertheless, it was an exhilarating experience.

Yep, the 330i pre-facelift was around for a little while before they introduced the facelift, but I think they only brought the M54B22 (2.2 320i) with the release of the facelift - open to correction though. Yep, M54B30 is an awesome engine!! :inlove:
