After-market warranty

Hi hi.

DO NOT go for innovations group. They are sharks.
They promise cover on everything and cover absolutely nothing...
I had a terrible experience and I'm not the only one...

Try Hollard or anyone else.

Have a great day and happy hunting...

In my opinion it's not worth taking out an aftermarket mechanical warranty. These contracts are all about the fine print and the specific exclusions. In addition they usually put such restrictive servicing conditions on the contract that you may as well carry the risk yourself. For example the vast majority of these warranty contracts exclude a cracked cylinder head or the consequences of a broken timing belt. Both of those issues are disastrous and expensive to repair, and it's for precisely this type of failure than you'd want the policy in the first place. The best insurance is to make sure it's properly maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations coupled with a shorter oil change interval. Other members on here might have happy experiences to share regarding successful aftermarket warranty claims, but I'll bet that they are few and far between.

The amount of angst you'd have about mechanical breakdown is quite closely linked to the vehicle you want to insure too; what car are you wanting to cover?

Worked out great with my e46. Saved me a few times. But they are like total sharks now! They say a turbo is covered, mine blew seal, but seal not covered????? So guess who has to pay. Not worth it anymore, they will just look for anyway out. O and them if something else happens they will say it's wear and tear. Aaaaaargh, this happen last week and I'm still pissed off

+1 I cannot disagree,
Sharks all the way, if you are lucky enough to get them to pay then they will only pay a fortune.
Whats the mileage like on your car? If its high then the best option would be to do as "Auditor" says. preventative maintenance works best.

As i understand it, most of these warrantys covers mechanical failure, not wear and tear. I believe it is up to the RMI approved shop you take the vehicle to prove to the company that an item has failed over wear and tear.

Some would consider the Crank pulley on the 3.0d a wear and tear item as it is common to give in at a relative mileage, but mine was covered under the warranty.

Yeah totally. The workshop I took it too didn't do me any favors. The company sent an assessor to check the turbo. Last car I got control arm bushing covered by warranty and to me that's wear and tear. If you take out one of these warranty things make sure you have a good RMI approved shop that's willing to help you with the claims etc

I was never able to find one that I thought added any worthwhile value without costing an arm and a leg but I think it also comes down to the car you buy and how much risk it poses.

call Avis Fleet and get a quote from them as well.

im with blue label warranties at the moment for my Astra Coupe Turbo, but just got it as a selling point when I sell the car which will be next month or so.

but this is a good question and I'll follow this thread closely.

We had a warranty with SA Warranties I think, during which time we had one mechanical breakdown and needed to claim.

I cannot remember what it was, but I do remember them refusing to pay (either fully or the portion not covered) due to non-coverage of parts that needed changing to access the actual mechanical failure.

I gave them hell though - these aftermarket warranties are generic, not vehicle specific, so it doesn't take into consideration the additional steps involved in order to repair/replace the covered parts. I just argued that it was misleading to provide coverage and refuse coverage on those terms - eventually my unwavering battle panned out and they covered the total cost.

It's mostly not worth it on cars these days - it's mostly a buffer for the savings you don't have when you need to cover a repair you definitely didn't budget for. I'm sure some people are wise at keeping emergency funds in place for incidentals, I'm just not one of them - eek. I guess it comes down to whether you need that safety net vs keeping a savings stash to cover huge incidentals yourself. Either way, good luck!

I also don't think that a warranty is the best idea. If you are going to get one for peace of mind, I would use SA Warranties. I know someone with and OPC that claimed around R100k in his 2 years, he also took the top up option. Most times that we've had unpaid claims, is due to customers not servicing their cars on time. We rarely see the assessor, so I also think that it depends on the workshop's relationship with them.

Haven't heard anything good about Motorite or SA Warranty's. Hollard is the only one that I've heard some positive feedback on.

I have a Hollard warranty (Cruise Option) on my 335i. Had one claim so far for a thermostat. Hollard covered cost of towing car to BMW and cost of replacing thermostat less my excess which was about R700 I think. Cost of thermostat was R3800. What they did not cover was the diagnostics BMW did to find out why car was overheating. Auto Atlantic dropped the diagnostic cost as I had quite a few issues after buying car from them.

The plan costs me R450 a month. In total I have paid R7650 and have claimed R4350. I am keeping the plan only to allow me to build up some savings. If I look at it I might as well have put the R450/month with my savings. But I guess it is a gamble you take.

I am with SA Warranties.
Submitted a claim which was approved.
They covered what they said they would cover, which was about 40% of total cost. Gap cover with MFC took care of the rest.

I agree with the comments that its important to have a garage that works with you and is familiar with submitting claims to these mechanical insurance groups - there is a very specific procedure to follow and the claims have to be worded very carefully - I know a lot of guys that have milked them for more than the policy cost to repair various things (starter motors, radiator expansion tanks, electric window mechanisms etc)
