After market air filter

So after doing the decat, I decided to look at what other options I have for small cheap mods... First thing I though was air filter but with a million different options to go for, I need help deciding.

Any advice will help, like what is the difference between oiled and dry? Is it bad for the engine? What are the performance gains? Does it sound very different?

Thanks

I have a cold air induction kit with a k&n cone and it is great. Sounds awesome and I feel a slight increase in the top end.

Me and Wick-ed have the same so take a listen to his 328i on the run if he is there. Either that or we can just swap, its just 2 bolts.

it was from signaturemotoring.com but I wouldn't recommend them as the service was crap. took 5 months to get the kits. Although they have a really great heat shield. Cost about R1200 at the time.

Bring a size 10 socket to the run and you can lend mine for part of the run, will just drop your airbox into my car.

Just watch out for Sank. :fencelook: Hehe he will definately advise against it. I myself have a drop in K&N Filter. Not much difference in power with a drop in filter but better fuel consumption.

Sank is in the E46 school though. The E46 breathes a lot better than an E36. In my opinion CAI is essential for the E36.

Yeah yeah

Frankly I am tired of advising against it, you guys should just do whatever the hell you want, replace your filter with a coffee filter for all I care

As gconry said I can't really comment about the e36 stuff don't really know much about it.

The air filter and fuel consumption a tricky one. If your a heavy foot driver your consumption will increase, especially if it sounds nice.

+1000.

But it still makes me sad that people have such great belief and trust in these aftermarket flytraps. Frankly, I would not even use them as cabin filters.

the thing is the filter is not the restriction... its the air box... changing the filter does almost nothing... this is why im making a custom CAI with a larger paper filter...

i will have proper filtration and more airflow...

Im just messing around Sank. I do believe its time to get rid of the drop in filter and rather go CAI or just revert back to stock OEM paper filter

Difference between oiled and dry ? I still think a free flowing cotton filter does so by not catching small particles in the air .Do the filter manufacturers give filtration effieciency , i.e. the microns it filters ? e.g. 7 microns etc.
The Simota cone sounds nice on my e36 325i , I think getting cold air to the filter is important . My 328i has std filter and airbox without baffle , does sound great if revved with filter out .

Dude, do you honestly think that the engineers who built your awesome to drive BMW and got it's 300000 parts to work together properly and give feel are stupid enough to then go and fit a restrictive airbox?

These things (Airboxes) are incredibly clever, and use resonance and air velocity and what would normally be wasted energy to physically pump air into the engine at certain RPM's.

The biggest myth here is a big hole or pipe = lots of air, that's a truly retarded way of understanding it. Using helmholtz resonance and an understanding of fluid dynamics you can shove a massive amount of high velocity air through a tiny hole faster than a standard large hole.

Argh.... I give up, just chop the factory air boxes up if you guys think it's a good idea.... whatever.

Rick look at some Kawasaki motorbikes with Ram Effect where tubes below the headlight channel air to the airbox , this works well at high speed with higher bike speed causing higher air velocity and pressure , increasing the power .
