If you have 85 to both buy and get the car up to good scratch then I'd say rather look about maybe for an E36 coupe, you could probably get a 325i coupe for around the 60k mark, this leaves you, lets say, 15k for maintaining and 10k as a buffer for fuel etc.

The good E46s are already becoming *very* pricey, somewhere on here there's a dude who has a 15 page wanted thread for a 330 (and I think he is comfortable dropping R100k on one of those).

I doubt you'd get a good E90 for the money you have, and if you do your budget will be stretched.

The E36 is extremely simple and a lot can be DIY'd, if you're 18 it means you can also spend some of your ample time learning on the car.

E46 330d would be perfect. :cartel:

agreed, however with said budget, you can comfortably get an e46 320d and still have some cash left for maintenance, an e46 330d (6 speed manual) is difficult to find, and i am doubtful that you will get one with your available budget.

Agreed. I'm just weary of the diesels.... Thoughts on the older petrols? e46 318i face-lift?

If you've got R85k to spend on a car plus sorting all the niggles that come with it you have to settle for an e46. Though I dont thing the 330i would be smart as your budget would be blown to bits if you buy one with issues. Settle for a 4 cyl e46 rather as it wouldnt blow your budget if you had to do repairs. Or maybe a 323i e46 if you really must have 6 cyl?

My biggest advice to your would be to stick to what your budget allows. Stay within the comfort zones of it. Since you're only 18 you have plenty of time to work your way up the BMW range as you get older. And one day end up in an M3 :smilebounce:

I would avoid diesel in that low price range, the maintenance costs on diesel vehicles with high mileage will kill you.

I would look at E87 116i & 118i, should be able to pickup a clean vehicle with decent mileage and good service history.

Get a 330, never been 4 cylinder fan, also some of them have worse fuel consumption than a 6 cylinder, the smooth refined nature of a bm 6 cylinder is a joy, every car you have will require some maintenance
