ADVISE NEEDED

Hi all good to be back from West Africa all went well with no hitches and no pirates :dunno: so no SKIET DIE BLIKSEM for me lol

I would like to get some advise and will try explain the problem as best as possable. It is really strange

CAR E46 330d ( 2003 f/l)
Problem : when driving hot or cold ( mainly when hot) long trips or short the turbo kicks in at 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm and cuts out at 3000 rpm spooling up quickerly and sometime nothing also have noticed lots of black smoke when this happens and other ocasions clean as a whistle when going up steep hills lots of smoke low on power also sound like there maybe a leak in the down pipe well i am taking a flyer as there is a whistleing sound sometime. Is the snail on the way to snail heaven  and who would know what turbos are fitted and will a turbo from a x3 30d fit ( has electronic actuator ) as there is one for sale on the tree cheap as chips like 2k
oh also forgot to mention it is 3000km's over due for service :slap:
could this also be part of the problem.

Thanx guys and it is great to be back

The turbo VNT unit is most likely sooted up... New turbo is the best option. I would not do all that labour for a used unit, I would get a new one they are in the region of R8200 excl from engine parts. Then you know you have a new one.

+1 on the vnt prolly messing around.

might be AFM or MAP sensor too though, but most prolly vnt (or a perished vacuum pipe? ).. the turbo with electric actuator will not fit, on your model the vnt is vacuum controlled.

welcome back

thanx guys but there a new one I have learnt - not yet :) what does VNT stand for
and if I get an over haul done new internals

VNT stands for variable nozzle turbo, essentially it means the turbo has a variable A/R, giving you a much wider boost range and lower lag times. It's not used much on petrol cars because of the raised exhaust gas temperatures. The porsche 911 turbo uses two of these, but the VNT mechanism is made out of inconnel to withstand the temperatures. (Inconnel is the very expensive alloy also used for Formula 1 exhaust manifolds)

Whats the mileage on the turbo? You can get it overhauled, although Garrett advises against rebuilding a VNT, for various reasons. If you insist on going that route, send it to Turbo exchange. It should cost around R1500. But if the mileage is high, rather replace the whole thing, since fatigue on the impellers can wear them out and one of them might release a blade at some point, and then you will need to pay for all the labour to install a brand new one anyway...
