I changed tyres on my uncles X5 4.8is about 3 months ago...4 new tyres were 65k!!!

That a fu*king serious rip of, We paid R29 950 fitted balanced, runflats 20''

But im still sure prices can be got alot better then that.

Does you Gents not shop around, I pay no more then R4g per tyre (Bridgestone dueler R/F) in 20inch, you okes are way overpaying.

65000 for tyres lol.

E53 was never available in manual, only autobox.

The X5 drivetrain is pretty solid unlike the E83 X3 which has a lightweight transfer case that only lasts 150k km.

I've driven e53 manuals. Awesome things.


Things to look out for are namely.
Rear air suspension R4000 fix
Auto box - no idea how
Radio pixels dying.
Finish and kla. Nice SUV, with decent 4x4 capabilities and on the road no other SUV can hold a candle in the price range.

Diesel was... broken broken broken... think it had a manifold leak turbo was very loud and it had no torque...

Petrol sounded good when it arrived... we chatted for a bit then tried to start it... no power... turns out he fitted another battery because its battery was flat from the car standing and it was too small... we got it started eventually engine sounded good and pulled nicely... MAF was unplugged so i suspect that needs replacing and Idle was not even... pulled 1000x better than the broken diesel we drove before...

other faults:
cracked windscreen

central locking not working and front passenger door wont open from outside

air suspension might be an issue the car felt like it was wiggling at the back over uneven ground (not sure if this is normal adjustment)

anyone fixed these items? what was the cost...

Moranor, why don't you have a look at Rolf from Promotec's car as it is a 2006 with about 165k km on th odo and the price has come down to R150k, and he will throw in a free chiptune as a bonus. E53 sport with panorama sunroof. My 2003 E53 diesel pre facelift has now done 236k km and and i am quite happy with it. It amazes me the way it cruises at the speed limit even up steep hills without losing speed. Just goes and goes and gives about 11 - 11,5 km/l. Amazing!

65K is bull. I just did a very detailed shop around and I could get sport pack tyres for 11K and ended up fitting Hankook Ventus for 15K. VERY good tyres.

looking at pre-facelifts under 100k... the Diesel guy wanted 110k for it even had dog foot prints on the bonnet :nonono:

I am actually quite comfortable with getting the petrol IF i can get it for under 80k general condition was good and the guy did not try cover up anything... he also seemed quite willing to negotiate price...

Im going to try drive a few more next week...

not scared of suspension can always make a plan there I think i may have to rethink the 3l with the auto box... i dont think with that body weight it will have enough torque when combined with an auto... might have to go V8 :rollsmile:

Seems that only 3.0i petrol and 3.0d diesel were available in manual trans in the E53. The 4.4i V8 only came in auto.

Ive recently done wheele alighnment on my x5. They said the camber needs to be bended its out alot. Should i first let the bushes be cheked or do the bushes not make a difrence on the camber

My advice would be to do bushes first. Both upper and lower.

My friend was using his families E53 (i think, the old one) X5 3.0i (300 000kms+).

His gearbox is clearly stuffed but he takes it to auric auto claremont. He tells them his problem. When he puts it in reverse he has to rev the living shit out of it to get it to budge.

They say to him, that's a new gear box. For you car its R90 000. Trade in on your car is R110 000. So we'll give you R20 000 and take it off your hands. Those guys are lucky I wasnt there to tell them where to shove their R20 000. My friend wasnt even trying to sell them his car. wtf. :thumbdo:

I want to purchase a 2nd hand X5 but will only be able to spend +/- R 300 000 in the process. The response I got from (non BMW ) motor owners was generally along the lines of "if you cannot really afford a new or fairly new X5 rather leave it";" you should never own a X5 that is not under motor plan"; "if you must buy a 2005/2006 X5 model then rather go for the petrol than diesel";" fitting new tyres will cost R32 000 "; etc, etc. I then decided to rather get opinions from X5 owners on this forum because you will give me informed and balanced opinions on the issue. I would therefore appreciate any comments in this regard even if it is merely to confirm that what I have already been told is more or less the way it is. If however what I want to do can be done I would appreciate suggestions as to what model(s), petrol/diesel , motorplan extensions etc.

the warranty from the garage you bought wil help make sure to take the topup with that. They paid for the new turbo and fittment on my x5 the 3.0 diesel is a greate car. Ive recently went to margate and got 13.4 km/ ltr average 125 km/h. Cant realy go faste on highway because of all the speed cameras. I can tel you surely that this car keeps his speed up and down , i was haevy loaded. You wil not struggel its got enough power under that hood.
