Advice needed on crooked dealer

Did you not check the registration papers, this would have confirmed the details of the car.

Have you approached the dealer with this info?

If you are wanting to return the vehicle than I suppose the first thing would be to talk to the dealer and try come to a resolution.

...the date liable for first licensing is 1992/12/30

It may have taken them a year to sell the car.

Remember, legally in SA a car model is the date of registration, NOT the date of manufacture.

My car was manufactured Oct 2002, however first registered in Jan 2003. Therefore, in SA, my car is a 2003 model.

Hi Guys.

let start from the beginning, the dealer advertised the bmw as a 1992 bmw 525i, i traded in my 1988 mercedes benz 230e on the bmw

earlyer this evening i searched for parts on the internet using the car's VIN number, according to the web my bmw is a 1991 bmw 520i

Is there any actions i can take against the dealer ?

here's the ad :

http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars/benoni/bmw-5+series/1001100833230910212694009

Real oem and our vin numbers dont correspond hey! Also a 1991 production run could well only be registered in 1992.

If I search my vin on the net It comes up as a european brown metallic 325 ix...

It is common for all manufactures to use the sameparts across different models, with regards to the variance in reg years, I am sure those 5series were fully imported back then, you log book will show the year of first registration.

Yip, the date of manufacture and date of registration in SA dont always match. So it may be a manufactured 91 car sold in 92. Lots of people buy cars in Dec and ask they only be registered in Jan, this way they 'score' basically a year on the model when they sell it.

However a pic of the engine bay and the body plate will tell you what car it is 520 or 525, no mistake there, did you not look at the body plate or tag? I think on these models it will be on the sides. inside the engine bay, opposite side of the outside fenders.

Some discrepancies do exist on realoem, especially with SA vin numbers but most cars built after 90 are pretty accurate. Can tell you the dealer will argue you it was a voetstoets sale, or was misprint on the net. Will probably end up with a he said, you said scenario.

Sorry bud and 520 are dogs, lazy and heavy on fuel. BMW's early 6 cyl 2.0lt engines were crap in the 5 and 3 series of the time. Whole reason why I modified my e30 320i , was one of the slowest and shittiest bmw engines I know.
 sorry

Reg date is fine... but call BMW with the vin and confirm what engine it has... Realoem can sometimes be wrong

my 1985 528i's vin number doesnt even detect on realoem or vin decoder for that matter.

my ex 1986 520i did.

have NO IDEA Why the car is fully legit, the vins everywhere match up. original owners book..chassis etc etc...

its as if bmw sa forgot to submit the records when they built the car.

eg. say a dealer got a new car on their floor in December 2013 ... they only sold the car in 2014 ... it will be registered as a 2014 model car ... so i dont see any wrong from the dealer on this ... if the paper work shows 1992 ... then there shouldn't be any issue at all ... it goes according to the paper work ... dont think you have any case

EDIT: i see the car is selling for R15 000 ... legally lets say for a moment yes it is a 1991 model car ... how much financial leverage would you gain ... couple of R100?

and yes cars share parts ...

EDIT 2: hmmm ... the 520i thing and 525i thing can be an issue ... cause paper work just shows 5 series ... does the car have its original service books and manuals (i know this might not be possible) ... if so check that

coincidentally... 15k is 520i money.. or a really manky 525i.
20k - 22k - 25k thereabout is 525i money.

typo on gumtree add?

unless the joker actually verbally said to you 525i.

car reg docs is a joke. honestly. having recently sold 2 cars and lets just say worked with too many yellow and blue forms the last year, the detail just insnt there. both my 85 5 series and 2001 5 series simply say "5 series" on the reg docs.

Send me the car details, Registration number, VIN number - [email protected]
I will see on Enatis what it says...might help you a bit.

I also know that the older bmw's, even the M3 and M5 models, were actually registered as the lowest model derivative, so as a 316i and as a 520i, cause that time in the 90s the natis didn't allow them to put in the different models, but the engine cc should show what engine it is...if its listed.

So I will look at it and see if I can help you out a bit :thumb:
