Hi Guys

My uncle is looking to purchase a BMW, he is looking at the E46 325i manual.

What are the pros and cons of the 325i. What should he look out for? Any common issues?

Thanks as always

The e46 325i is an awesome car.

the engines are bulletproof.

What spec is he getting.. Is it an Exclusive, Sportpack, Individual, MSport?

Year?
Mileage?
Colour?

When buying the car, he should do the usual preventive maintenance things. They have been mentioned many times in other posts. in short:

  • Lower Control Arm Bushes
  • Expansion Tank Replacement
  • Service

there are other items, but these should be the first to be replaced.

Theyre are really great cars. the Manual gearbox suits the car well. Its not quarter mile specialist, but not a slouch either, and that Inline 6 is gonna sound awesome. a good amount of power in that car. Economy wise, its not going to be lighter than a 330i, so if a 330i is also in the books, then the 330i should be the first choice... but the 325i is still a great car.

Tell him that if the bodywork, and the mechanical history of the car check out, then its a great car to own. I should know, cos Ive owned one in the past.

I've sent your response to him. Will wait for more information from him. He's just began his search. Not sure what spec he is looking at. He currently owns an Opel Astra 200IE the one with the CD 16V motor it is a beast for a 2.0L. I think he would go for the Individual or the MSport

Having been through the process of researching and searching for a car, the best advice I can give is to take your time. The more time you spend finding one that is in good condition and has been taken care of, the fewer unexpected issues you are likely to run into.

Is it this one? http://durban.gumtree.co.za/c-Cars-Vehicles-cars-bmw-325i-sport-pack-2004-W0QQAdIdZ434287036

If it is, well its nice because its Msport. There's nothing wrong with a higher mileage E46 as long as it has been maintained.

I get would get car thoroughly checked - suspension, cooling system, belts & pulleys, have diagnostics run to see if there are any codes, see how far brake discs and pads are from replacement, and make sure its had all its oil changes and inspection services.

I have an e46 325i that I bought new in 2004.

These are the things that I had to replace:
1 Expansion tank and cap
2 Radiator has a known issue where it gets a hairline where the expansion tank connects to it
3 Lower Control Arm Bushes
4 The Final Stage Resistor on the internal fan blower
5 Serpentine belt and tensioner pulleys
6 If the car has not had it's battery replaced yet, it will soon
7 Rectifier on the alternator

Mine is almost ticking over to 200 000 kilometers and that was the only big repair items, well actually more of an inconvenience.

And I must admit that I am a very spirited driver.

Looks like a clean car. Like Adis said, take your time. Don't jump at the first car you find, of course if it is as advertised in reality and the history of the car checks out then by all means go for for it:thumbs: It's a very good price.

Check the service intervals, this will give you an indication as to how the car was driven. Also look at the intervals between clutch and brake changes. Take it for an AA Dekra 101 point check as well. I think they charge about R600 for a full inspection and roadworthy.

Had my one for 5 years and it was bullet proof sold it on 180k on the clock. next owner is still happy.

1. Lower controll arm bushes use Myle product and you have solved that problem.(R900)

2. Fit a strut brace(R3000) and your road holding gets even better

3. Blower resistor(hedghog) R900 from agents went on about 120 000km

4. Oil level sensor +/- R1000 went on 140 000km

5. and obviously tyres and brakes

6. New LUK clutch and flywheel on 120 000km (R5000)

Taken on 5 year period its not much money spent. and its fuel consumtion of 325i manual is good and very close to a 318i auto and on the longroad it nearly the same driving at the same speed.

Its not a 330i but 325i manual gives you a bit of performance and good economy

Good car :thumbs::thumbs:
