@Andrew
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing - nothing smaller than a 328...

I've got to wait till I start work next year before I can get things really going. But keeping my eyes open for cars. :thumb:

@Moranor
I'd prefer not to turbo... But knowing me, I'll be wanting more power as soon as I'm used to the 328.

GET YOURSELF A 328I AND TAKE IT TO SAVSPEED FOR A TURBO CONVERTION, IT'S VERY RELIABLE AND YOU CAN USE IT FOR A EVERYDAY DRIVE. DON'T GO FOR M3, PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE WHEN IT COMES TO MODS AND SOMETIMES HARD TO GET.

@JOHAN LUUS

Your caps lock button stuck???

what about a 330d e46 they did a daytona thing with one on top gear :hammerhead:

here is the link :clap:

What a great episode... Still one of my favourites. The motor can be highly tuned - or the ecu rather - and shows huge performance. Problem is, it's still a diesel. I love the sound of a petrol engine, especially a 6 cylinder!

So I've been searching the web on e36 track car builds. Interesting insights...

328iM - softer
M3.2 - harder

For N/A track use get M3
For FI go 328iM

For everyday all rounder get 328i and soopitup

8?>

my 3 cents (adjusted for inflation)

The 3.2 M3 seems like a good idea. Not sure of pricing of parts, heard it can be quite steep. I prefer NA over FI. But will see...

Gonna have to look at what the e36 M3's go for (standard that is).

Ouch... R100K + for an e36 M3. Probably going to go with the 328 then. :mmm:

The problem with older M3s is it is a hitech very developed engine. So when it was new it kicked ass right out the box as it gets older it becomes a) expensive and complicated to develope further. b) expensive to repair and maintain.

If you opt for 1 car does all... then you will sit without a car at some stage, unless you fork out for a relatively new M3. At which point you will have an M3's DD maintance bill.

I would go for an e36 328i or an E30 325i. I had a e30 325i and they are a pleasure to play around with and make better track toys IMHO as they are more compact and lighter? Remember track toys are all about power and weight.

The other thing to consider is when are you going to use it?

You're welcome Applehero, doing some shopping on the 'Gum for my dad, if all goes well he hopes to return form his Jo'burg trip with a late-model (04/05) e46 330i. He's looking at 100K and under, and we have found a few nice examples, particularly a white SMG that's been floating around for 90K.

If you guys hear of anything in that price range up for sale in the next few days, please forward the details to me at [email protected]

I would love an M3 as a track car. As you say, it's cost related... Financially it makes more sense to get a 328 and kit that out. Capital cost will be half, and running costs will be lower.

That's something else I need to look at... I'm planning on using it mainly on weekends - when I can get away from the tractor sound. I'll also attend track days - there have been 13 this year at Zwartkops. Maybe a few others, but will see. BMWCC seems to be implementing a racing series as well. So maybe that too... :thumb:

Geez, why am I the only guy here to suggest an E30? :) If you want a track rat then an E30 is a very inexpensive base, chuck all the crap out, put it in a 328i engine and upgraded suspension, brakes, etc. and you're A for away. People here knock them for being rustbuckets and expensive to repair, but if you find one in even relatively good condition you're stripping it anyway to be a track car, so? They're so easy to work on as well.
