Advice Needed - 320d

Howsit guys,

So the replacement of the 320i is between a Golf 5 GTI DSG and a 320d Auto. I really need advice on the 320d as I dont know diesls at all and furthermore, will choosing the 320d be the right choice in terms of resale value further down the line.

My current vehicle has no extra's beside rear PDC and I have changed the wheels to 17" ///M Sportpack wheels.

The 320d has the following spec:

Year: 2008 (pre-facelift)
Model: 320d Auto
Mileage: 60 000
Colour: Silver
///M Sportpackage
Sunroof
Rear PDC
Bluetooth connectivity
Price: ~R229 000.00

I have the following questions:

Is R229 000.00 a good price?
Being a pre facelift, shouldn't I be concerned about resale value as the new 3 series is being launched 1st Q 2012?
Anything I should be concerned about in general?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thnx

Have you driven both of them

The Deisel is a bit noisy and it does not have the sporty sound of a Golf GTI.

But I think the 320d pre facelift will be quicker than the Gold 5 GTI

The issue with BMW's as far as resale value goes once you get a BMW you married to it so no one is going to give you a good tradein unless its a BMW.

But if you going to stay in the BMW brand you should not have a problem with it keeping its value

You also find when the new Models come out the old models get a boost in demand since the new ones are so much more expensive so I would not worry about resalve value that much.

I would also shop around a bit more you might find one closer to 200k check out the BMW.co.za website and check for approved used cars search on the site

Also start calling BMW dealers and you could find some good deals out there.

The thing that does affect resale value though is the motor plan you let that lapse and you going to take a hit in resale value.

Also how long do you intend on keeping the car? 320d's can get a bit expensive to maintain over 100k km's

I have driven the GTI but not the 320d yet. So I will wait to drive both again before making a final decision.

This car will be at a BMW dealer as of November (tomorrow) I think.

If I buy the 320d - I wont want to keep it - 3 and a bit years perhaps but then I'll look to change.

Thanx

If you do decide to get the 320d then keep it in motor plan and you should be fine

Don't forget to put the gearbox into DS when you test drive it

Thanx for the info - will be sure to push it on the test drive cos I'm looking for something with a fun factor as a replacement for the 320i.

G5... Gti has street credit and is easier to sell down the road in the 3 or so years... Holds better vaule too, however take nothing away from the Beemer, it's a nice machine too, I would go gti on this one though!

All the best

Is this a typo? I almost fell off my chair!!!! The Golf is lightyears faster than the 320d... even if comparing it to the 135kw 320d... Am I missing something.
Now, add that the golf has DSG and the 320d has a slow poke auto, then this must be a typo....

I would tend to agree with killua... G5 GTI is quite strong, quicker than a E90 prefacelift 320d. I'm not sure about the 135kw LCI 320d though, have heard they are nippy!

If you can find a clean G5 with low milleage I would lean more towards it for fun factor and resale will be better than the 320d

just my 2cents

Good luck:thumbs:

you missing the FACT that the motor industry has had it wrong all these years and they should have started using diesel ages ago because diesels are faster than anything else lol

Hi Guys

I had a go against the G5 GTI with my e90 323i and I must say i did not beat him since he is quicker off the line but I was on his ass the whole way.

My 320d will kill him no questions

ROFL!!! I get that alot. Spoke to another bloke who also thought that the 320d is faster than the GTI!!! :roflol:

FACT!!! The 5 or 6 GTI is faster than ANY stock 320d..... EVER!!!!
Think about it. The golf is margninally lighter, and has less tranny losses. And even the 5 GTI has 147KW. That is 12KW more than the most powerful stock 320d... You can't even compare tractibility (in gear acceleration noobs ) of a diesel and turbo charged petrol car. The GTI will beat my 320d in every single gear, at any speed, from 3rd gear to 6th gear. It puts down more torque to the road than the 320d.
Any person in a 320d that has ever beaten a 5 or 6 GTI has caught the GTI in the wrong gear, fact. If the GTI is in the correct gear, there is never a situation where the 320d will beat it. I have taken on Audi A4's with the same 2l tsi motor and when the guy was in the right gear, he left me behind so fast that it was looking like I was searching for a parking spot.

Now Add that the DSG golf is faster (in real life) than its manual counterpart, and that the 320d auto is slower than the manual counterpart, needless to say that the golf dsg will brutally murder the 320d auto...

@de@on0: I have the 135kw, and test drove the 130kw version. No real difference.

I have driven the Golf 6 GTI DSG and all I can say is that its brutal compared to my 320d. The gearbox is a love hate situation. When I was aggressive it changed gears so fast that I couldnt believe. But when driving slowly it pissed me off. Not more than any other auto, but more than my manual. Its not as smooth as the audi multitronic, but good enough if you have to sit in joburg traffic most of the time.

Just because somebody beat you, doesn't mean that his foot was on the floor... Go and check the specs of both cars.

Oh, I might also add that the GTI's power is very underrated. If you look at what they are putting out on the dynos, some of them have nearly 170kW on the fly in stock form...

Tough Choice you got there... Both are awesome cars..
I would go for the G5 DSG since the 320d is the pre-facelift.. If it was the LCI then different story... Let us know what you choose.. GL

R229000 is bit steep IMO. Closer to R200k would be better. I bought a '07 320d with 60 000km on the clock last year and it cost me R198 000. When I traded it on the Dynamic I got R207 000 for it.

With regards to the golf... Its not in the same league, and by that I mean comfort and space. You have to decide which will suit your needs better.

some very important advice, have a look at when the 320d was manufactured, then also see what it is registered as and look at the retail value, if it was late 2008, pm me...

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for their bits of advice - really helped and much appreciated.

Wow - I'm shocked. at the responses. I would have thought that most people would recommend the BMW as seeing this is a BM forum.

To be honest, I have initially been leaning toward the GTI5 DSG but to find a one in Black with DSG, Sunroof, 18", Xenons, fairly low mileage and well maintained is a bit of a hassle. I missed the one that Auto Atlantic had :(

I think you guys also reaffirmed my decision to go with the GTI so this will be a waiting game. My 320i is still for sale though, so as soon as the 320i is sold I will start proper scouting. For now though I have made a few enquiries with Barons and their guys have my number.

Let's see how this goes. I'm hoping to be driving the GTI within this month.

Its called unbiased advice.
I still choose my 320d above the gti... but thats just how I feel at the moment. The gti would have cost more in terms of fuel, tyre price. It also has a much smaller boot. I happily sacrificed the performance for all the above, not to mention the fun factor of the rwd.
