A question on 320i aircon

The aircon in my wife's e46 320i makes some funny noises when you switched it on. It is still blowing cold air but i rather not use it at the moment as i do not want to damage something. Is it short of gas or what's making this noise. It sounds as if you can hear the gas circulating. Sorry if this sound stupid.

if gas was finished, it would just blow out warm/outside air.

I had a similar noise on my E36, and it was the fan blower motor that was failing. stopped spinning as fast as it needed. Costs about R400 for a second hand unit.
