A Bit Paranoid

Hi Gents,

My wife says im paranoid because i worry my about car more than most other things.

So what happened was I went to visit some family yesterday and arrived at their house at 1:00pm, they live about 100km away.

anyways they(family) saw my 328 and said they wanted to take it for a spin, so around 4:30 they took the car out for a drive but failed to warm it up when they started driving....I mean they drove the hell out of that car I didn't even think my car was that fast. anyways we got home and it had a smell to it like it was brakes,engine or something like that.

so do you think the engine/ gearbox etc could have fully cooled in 3hours (from 1 to 4 pm ) and that i needed to be warmed up again and that the smell is an indication of something bad or is it from the hard driving.

Your wife is wrong for calling you paranoid, if you were paranoid no-one would drive your car but you. Never borrow your car to anyone, even if its family wanting to take it for a spin. I take it you didn't go with them? Else you would have told them to drive slow to heat up the oil first?

I must agree, i can count the no. of people on 3 fingers that i would let drive my car. Nick is always no.1 on that list..

I would only let a very select few people drive my car, and under no circumstance for a joy ride.

Next time you visit, ask to drive one of their cars and give them some payback, see how they feel.

I figured the engine should have been warm still from the long drive,I wasn't sure if the engine could have cooled down fully in 3hrs.... but didn't expect them to drive it so hard,they drove it decently for the 1st KM before hammering it in comfort mode



Anyways just wanted your thoughts on the matter and if its worth stressing over

i can assure you that within that first KM, you would've been close to proper temperature (assuming your thermostat etc are all working 100's).

temps get up to operating temperature faster than you'd think... i've got a scan gauge that monitors engine temps from cold on my ride.. and it does happen very quick. on my E46, literally from overnight cold start to 60C within the first 4 mins of normal driving.
(i believe 94-97C is the fully warmed up temp, car never ever goes above that).

i wouldnt stress about it too much.... just DONT let this happen again. in general, people dont have the necessary "driving" respect for cars that they dont own themselves.

Perhaps true. But it doesn't necessarily mean the engine oil is up to temperature

My opinion is that don't worry about it. Am also one of those that really look after my car. You drove it for 100km and the engine shouldn't cool fully within 3 hours. It mostly depends on the outside temperature. If it was warm, don't stress, if it was cold, then the motor would have cooled down quite a bit, but would have warmed up before they floored it. Don't stress.

i assume you havent actually changed oil yourself? that stuff stays hot long after you turn off your engine. unless it was snowing outside, no way that oil is going to cool enough to worry about within 3 hours of the car being turned off.

The smell was probably brakes.
Oil would not have cooled all the way down in the time it was parked and the engine is designed to handle variable operating temperatures and conditions.

You should have no ill effects to be experienced.
But obviously, you dont want to be letting people floor your car just for fun on a regular basis.
