Right so a friend of mine has got an Audi A4 1996 2.8. I got a e36 325 1995. Both cars is automatics. My car is stock standard except some 17 inch rims, and my friends car got a free flow pipe and 18 inch rims.

Now the thing is he wants to take me on in a drag race and keeps on saying that he will demolish me. Now i am not one for these robot to robot races or even racing my car overall. But he is getting on my nerves.

I drive my car very carefully, i also let it shift under 3000 rpms. Its got about 215k on the clock, so i am afraid something might brake if i rev it to high. Hes car got 205k on the clock.

So my question is: should i take him on?, can i rev my car really high? who will win?

Also i love my car and keep it in great shape, and like i said i dont really like revving it up like a maniac, is it buildt to take this punishment? My car has also got this button next to the shifter that says sport mode.
When i engage that, the revs stay nice and high and acceleration is greatly improved. Like the manual says "for a more spirited drive, and to call on the reserve power of the engine".

I get so many citi golfs or corsa's pulling up next to me at robots, revving it up and wanting to dice. But always i just ignore them. I think they see the rims and then think "another street racer, lets dice him"

Sorry for the long post, but maybe somebody can help me, or tell me what to do. My biggest concern is breaking something by driving in sports mode and revving it up. So if someone can help me that would be greatly appreciated.

Unlikely, that something will break in a brief sprint that will last less than a minute. You have taken good care of your car and it should do well in a quick race. Also if you do race, go for a roll on sprint instead of starting from standstill; it will be less strain on the car, gearbox (auto), tyres etc...My personal view is that you will win the race, but the problem is if you have never or seldom driven your car hard, the car will not perform hundered percent when suddenly pushed very hard. You need to coach it over the next few days, push it hard in sport mode so that you know what it is capable of before taking on the race. I have the e30 325is...in stock trim and in no condition to take on any one; but adds to my braging rights...heeeeee:thumbsup:

My personal opinion is: Don't race him. Enjoy your car for another 100 000 km.

I have a '91 E34 535i auto with 183k on the clock and the mechanic I am using said it is nice to drive the car slow and take nice care of it, but I really need to drive it in sport once a month like I stole it just to get the carbon of the pistons again and wake up the engine. If I drive mine that way, it kicks back @ 5000 rpms everytime. Thinking of it now, tell him to grow up. I also have a friend with a audi who always wanted to go at it, but I just ignored him and he grew up.

If the A4 is 1996 then it should have 128 kw and 250 nm , in 1997 the 30V model came with 142 kw.
Interesting , the manual cars as tested in CAR magazine are close :325i Nov 1993 , A4 Mar 1994.
325i man : 0-100 km/h - 8.13 s , 1km - 28.68 s , T/S - 228 km
A4 2.8 man 0-100km/h-9.25 s , 1km - 30.15 s T/S - 225 km
So , let him try someone else , Demolish ---pie in the sky !!:slap:

Make no mistake that 2.8 is a monster as well, that car is quite strong, I had a 98 I think, there were 3 models of them, the original B5 platform, then they brought out one which was slightly more refinded, and did not have the remote sensor (small little black plastic cover about 3cm in lengh by 1 cm down) on the door sills, if it is the second model, you may be in for some trouble.

However, that tiptronic box that he has in there is dog slow, gear changes on kickdown can take as much as 2 seconds if it has to drop more then 2 gears which kinda makes the car "lurch around" a bit while the gearbox wakes up.

I donno dude, it could be a close one, if you make sure that everything is warmed up, oil/gearbox ect, it may be fair game, purely based on the dogslow audi gearbox, and you should not break anything either provided she is up to temp, that is the biggest secret.

Also you are rearwheel, so you may have a slight advantage as well over his front wheel drive, even if he wins the sprint, you can always play the rearwheel drive card, as those Audi's are prone to understeer quite badly under huge power, trust me I know.

And if he has Quattro, the race is yours, as that extra 400kg's just turns the thing into a dog.

Let us know... I would be keen to hear the outcome on this one.
