8-Spd not perfect for diesel?

Morning Everyone

I traded my //M-Sport E90 323i on a F10 520d a few weeks ago.
Fair to say I am a BMW fan, but not totally blind to any negative comments, my opinion is that the 8-speed ZF is not at all ideal for a Diesel engine.

Especially driving very slow, or very fast, once you are on the open road and in the sweet spot, its really awesome.

Also, while driving on any road surface I notice my headrest shaking/vibrating a bit, even looking at the pax headrest, I noticed this as well. I took the car for wheel balancing/alignment, but still its like this. Surely this can't be the harshness of the diesel engine causing this...

Please give me feedback as to your experiences.

Update - The vibration is a MAJOR issue on F10s all over the world, have a quick google search, so it appears that most people on here are the blind loyalists, ah well, you win some you lose some.

Personally, I find the 8 spd ZF to be a masterpiece.

And no, the headrest's vibrations are not because of the diesel engine. hehehe

I would take your car to be checked. Something doesn't sound right. My 330d is seriously smooth.

I dont believe its the Diesel Engine thats causing the vibrations, you need to take her in for inspection.

I too believe that the 8 speed is an a work of art.

It almost makes the manual purist argument mute.

Have test driven a 520d, and had no such issues i noticed.

Agree with the gents, problem might not be with the ZF box. If something is wrong, it might be on your box rather than the design of the actual ZF 8 speed design

F30 330d with the 8 speed is sublime. Consumption that is to good to be true for a car that performs like it does. The box is always in the sweet spot.

Same here... I've also got the F30 330d for a couple of weeks now. I've found the box to be great, and thats coming from 3 VW and Audi DSG cars previously. It's not as quick as those boxes but smooth and seems to work very well in town driving for me.

Luckily haven't experienced the headrest vibrations yet, touch wood.

I've also noticed that the BMW 3l engine is smoother and less tractor-ish than the 2l diesel. By quite a margin. It was a key point in my purchasing decision.

maybe a bit more info is required on what you feel is lacking in terms of the gearbox.

What fuel are you using?

I'm a manual gearbox slut, but these newer ZF gearboxes could even "convert" me to automatic! I would get the car checked, doesn't sound right at all!

The 8 Speed auto is more geared towards the diesel than the petrol in my opinion as I have owned both derivations now. I want a manual box for my 335i!!

I think you are starting to get the picture with above comments.Have had three F30 330d and three F30 320d with the 8speed auto with no issue. This gearbox is really a hard act to follow. :praise:

Says the guy who didn't do his due diligence when buying a new car?

The 8 speed is a great gearbox.

+1 To everything said above.

Our X5 35d has a 6-Speed which tends to take it out of it's powerband a bit too often, the lack of power/torque at higher RPM becomes more noticeable. We had an F10 530d and I felt the 8-Speed kept the engine in its sweetspot.

My X3d and M35i have the 8spd box and it's a brilliant IMO and I have come from a few M's with DCT and the X5M's 6spd.

Driven the 8spd across various models its awesome in the petrol versions and having owned a e90 320d auto and then driving the f30/X3/f10 in diesel, I personally think its a perfect match.
