I'm still not sure if I should keep or sell the car. However when I go to my moms house and see the car in the garage. I think to my self I can't sell this. I really want to finish the car like my dad wanted to do. :argh: But as you and Clownshoe will know not cheap to do.

The e24 were beautiful to some people , but I think the restoration cost of spares , time and energy looking for parts may be a bit much .Good luck .

Some answers from the other forum.

The later dash will fit but the front vents and the recess for the HVAC system is different, so unless the recipient is a late 80 don't waste your time. Mechanically, except for the rear diff and cross member, he should be able to swap parts in. Cosmetically the interior is different including the way the seat tracks mount

the E24/1 and E24/2 door cards you can swap but you will have to swap all the door handle parts as well; the handles are quite different!

The rear side panel trims will fit quite well but won't match; IIRC the E24/1 ones have a shiny bit that the later cars don't have.

The dash will physically fit into the car but I don't know how many of the other parts that fit into it have to come along as well. If it is very many of them this would involve rebuilding and rewiring half the car..... I have feeling that someone has done this swap and written it up on this forum; worth a bit of search action I think.

In general it is quicker to list the bits that will fit between E24/1 and E24/2 models than those that won't....

-some engine, driveshaft and gearbox parts (but few are genuinely identical)
-some external trim pieces (some lights, parts -but not all- of the gutter trim etc)
-some body panels
-the glass (but tint may vary)
-some front bumper parts (Euro models)
-seats (rears yes but only late E24/1 fronts bolt right up to E24/2)
-some chassis electrical parts (but harness connectors are usually physically different)
-some interior trim
-wheels

er, thats it, I think.... Everything else is different (did I miss anything?)

You wouldn't expect many parts to swap between E12 and E28 5ers...
Well, basically, the E24/1 is an E12 5er in a smart suit, and the E24/2 is an E28 5er in a similar looking smart suit; lots of differences...

I reckon you will be able to fit the later bumper to this shell but there will be some work required to make it look right; IIRC the E24/1 bumper has a built-in 'valance' underneath but the later one has the valance as part of the body. Thus the bumper swap you intend to do is very similar to converting a US-spec car to take the 82-87 rear bumper, v. similar issues... some pics on this site, plus others elsewhere IIRC.

When you get it off you will see that the E24/1 rear bumper is very heavy being made of thick steel...

BTW I have a bunch of 9/81 build date RHD stuff from my donor car; springs, struts, subframes, interior trim pieces (* including an uncracked RHD dash top...*) etc. I also have some 87-89 type aluminium 'world' bumpers which might be an alternative for your project. Dunno if shipping to RSA is economic or not....

henry,keep it and restore it,dont make the same mistake i did,my dads conquest wasnt that well looked after,,but i let it go for R12000,shouldve kept it and turned it into a small project

now regret it

I've made up my mind a while ago I'm not letting this one go at all. I know the chances of me doing a full restore are very slim. But I'll keep plugging away at it over the years to come. I'll make sure that it will always stay in good running form and wont let it get any worse. You've seen it and its really not that bad. So it will do as is for now. I'll do small things as the $$$ comes in.
