I was just about to post this. I wonder how they going to facilitate it. Are they going to track down each and every owner?:fencelook:

"A BMW SA spokesperson said customers would be contacted within the next month as a precautionary measure."

hmmmm thats going to be one heck of a mission as some of those cars have been sold and re-sold since original owners.

I wonder what the issue is though.

The best bet if you have an E46 would be to take your VIN to a dealer and ask whether your car is one of the cars recalled. Although I doubt most dealers will even know about the recall.

Would be nice as I have a 2003. A fresh set of bags will make me keep the car another 11 years :)

Wonder if my car is affected. It's a 2004, but airbag could have been manufactured in 2003...

Hi Guys, not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but I came across this link on Wheels 24.

http://www.wheels24.co.za/News/BMW-SA-recalls-6000-3-Series-20130507

Quote from article below, although this line concerns me most: "or send metal fragments into occupants."

Cape Town - BMW is recalling about 6 000 of its E46 cars in South Africa because of an airbag problem that prompted five other major automakers to recall a total of 3.4-million vehicles.

The affected vehicles were made during 2002/03.

A BMW SA spokesperson said customers would be contacted within the next month as a precautionary measure.

'SUPER SUPPLIERS'

The Detroit News reported that the recall, originated in the US and blamed on an airbag made a decade earlier, is the latest in a series of high-profile airbag recalls in recent years. In April 2013 Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda and General Motors said they would recall 3.4-million vehicles worldwide because airbags could catch fire or send metal fragments into occupants.

Motoring website Edmunds.com’s senior analyst Michelle Krebs said the recall showed the effect of automakers using common parts.

"This recall is an example of the downsides of using 'super suppliers' for important vehicle components.”

Even if I had an E46, I wouldn't take it to Bmw ~) who knows what more problems your car will "magically inherit" once they done or the thought of those "part replacers", sorry I meant mechanics working on my car
