540i or 528i What to do?

I am trying to get used to this cold weather and the flu that goes with it...

I have this opportunity to drive my E39 525i or a friend of mine's E39 540i to Sedgefield on Monday.... cannot decide....

My car needs suspension work done before I should go....
The 540i has a temp guage issue (it jumps into red and stays there for a few seconds) that needs attention and has irratic idling.

I will be seeing dr Rick on Friday with the 540 and will only then know for sure...

Tough choice my man....
I'm over the moon with my E39 525i - so the 528i would be an awesome |6 2.8l option, otherwise it's the V8 4l.

Maybe your thermostat that needs placing or a leak in the cooling system?
Last time I priced the thermostat incl. the housing from the stealership it was sitting at around R1500.
