530d e39

I own a 530d my daily ride/ workhorse.

This is high miler and I experience a problem in that the car "chokes" at around 4,000rpm. Fuel consumption and performance no problem at all.

Previously had a similar problem at around 3,000rpm and had one of diesel pumps replaced which made a difference.

Any advice.

:eek:mgwaiting: was going to say - Fuel pumps might not be getting the pressure you need at the higher levels. If its a high miler then you best look at all items that have worked hard and need replacing.
How high is the mileage ?
when did you have the injectors replaced ?

wow

I also have the E39 530d, at 272 000 km's, and I treat her like a baby, I hardly ever get over 3000 RPM, when (by my standard) I drive agressively, I don't think I have ever seen 4000 RPM.

my daily average driving style is 1000 to 2500 RPM, which is more than sufficient for a normal daily drive

please dont break yours

At 4000rpm you're almost on the redline... Perhaps stay away from it if the car has a problem.

without being purposefully controversial

My e39 is happiest cruising at from 2750 to 3500 rpm, which is way above the speed limit, but its just the right revs for that car.

At 2000 rpm its as if it has broken into stride as such..
Almost as if it labours at this rpm.

Perhaps its just the exhaust note but seriously these cars are happy to rev a little but those rpm translate into serious speed.

I do agree that driving at 4000 rpm is pushing the engine a little hard and personally wouldn't do it all the time.

I cant recall if 4000 rpm is 200 or 220, i suspect the latter.

Hi Gents

My apology for stoking up controversy. It is not boy racing.

I have been driving BMWs for a long time and my previous daily runner was an e46 328i, which I have sold at 480,000km. The only reason was that I had to spend some money on the suspension and I felt that it was time for a newer car.

Cars are always maintained to spec and I would like to believe that sometimes even better than spec, i.e. more frequent oil changes and always changing all filters.

The only reason for the question was that the car is not performing to spec and I am trying to find the cause.

I decided to "attempt" agressive driving today

got to 3500 Rpm whilst aggresively accelerating, ...was actually scary !!

chickened out, and reverted to my standard relaxed driving style

I still haven't and won't see 4000 + RPM in my 530d, its way outside of my normal driving regime
