my buddies 520d just came off motorplan.

what mods would one recommend? and associated costs?

Spot on....
Three steps or levels of modification could be:
- the first step would be de-DPF with downpipe and software
- if the wallet or the ministry of finance will allow it then go for Freeflow Exhaust
- and then as a last step the Intercooler
