500ppm diesel in 2011 BMW 320d

If any one could help me with the following question, I will appreciate it very much. What will be the consequences if I fill up my tank with 500ppm diesel, only once and never again. What will the damage be, if any? I am driving a 2011 bmw 320d.

As far as physical damage there will be none the motor will happly run on 500ppm

The issue comes in with oil contamination the high amount of sulpher messes up the oil quicker one tank would make a huge difference but as soon as that service light come on for you next oil change do straight away

Look, the 500ppm will do nothing to the motor or turbo or injectors etc. In fact, it will only do them good (except for the oil contaminating faster). The reason why low sulfur is required is the diesel particulate filter. It will clog up pretty quickly on 500ppm and kill the turbo first. The good news is the particulate filter is regenerative, and there are sensors in place that will prevent it from killing the rest of the car, so if you fill up again with 50ppm, and do a 50-100km highway run and pass a couple of cars, it should be fine. It might have taken away some of its life though.

so if you get rid of these particulate filters then it should be fine?

yeah oil change every 5k to 7k km's at least

If you are worried about price there are a few garages that 50ppm is cheaper than 93 unleaded

I know of one in Rosebank and one in bedfordview I think its R9.70 a liter now for sasol 50ppm

The total near the glen shopping centre is also quite cheap

I found Shell to be the most expensive. Usually fill at Sasol but I know it's not the cheapest.

when we fill up the navara,we only go to one garage, sasol waterkloof, and to be honest dont take notice of what they charge per litre.

That's what I've always wanted to know:idea:... On my bakkie and trucks, we do oil every 5000 - 7500km, depending on intensity and time between changes.

But my mothers Freelander is much longer. She's got the 2006 TD4, which has the old 320D motor. Service intervals are much longer.

i always smile when this topic comes up.. amazing what what marketing can do..

if you read again what p1000 said a few posts up, you will realize that 50ppm is not in fact the best for engines, its is however the best for emmisions (more spesific the emmision equipment fitted to modern diesels- e90)

500ppm has much better lubricating properties than 50ppm. thus the older diesels benefit from 500ppm , and i think it would shorten their lifetime using 50ppm exclusively. of course manufacturers will never tell you this.

as for the oil getting acidic more with 500ppm than with 50ppm, its prolly true, but i am not convinced that its even a measurable impact over an engine's lifetime..

i run my 2004 330d mostly on 500ppm, with oil changes every 15k, and its heading now for 250k with no hassles..

Same here - 2003 530d just about 290k. (previous owner let some services go to 25k, which I do not approve, though.)

I have had to do this a couple of times since I bought the 320d, the engine runs fine and the car sppears to be none the wiser, although i have noticed that a tank gets finished faster.

But that could be due to my driving style at that time or due to many other factors, where only a lab test will show if 50ppm gives better fuel economy than 500ppm.

In fact, overseas, guys advise you to run the engine of 500ppm once in a while, just to clean things out.

I think you will be fine and shouldnt lose any sleep over it.
