4-series GC vs 3-series - is the price difference worth it?

Hi,

Just a random thought.

Is the difference in price between a 4-series Gran Coupe and a 3-series, for identically specced models, really worth it?

The 4-series GC body shape looks better, but is the 4's build quality also better, given that the 4 is imported (made in Germany) while the 3 (up until very recently) was made locally in SA?

On the plus side for the 3-series, besides lower price, is the fact that the 3 is around 100kg lighter than the 4 (at least for a 320d vs a 420d). So, the sexier looks of a 4 are negated by the weight penalty.

The 3 Series built in SA had the same built quality as the ones built abroad as they were also sold to the Americas so build quality should not be a concern.

I am a fan of the 3er so my comment will be biased. I just think when BMW made the 4 series they should have just kept it 2 doors instead of making a 4 door version of a car based on a 2 door version which was based on the 4 door version :dunnoanymore:

My money would buy a 3er no doubt because a 3 series is a 3 series, tried and tested and there have been previous iterations of it so it gets better from each version. The 4er has to be a two door otherwise it makes no sense.

If you want a 4 door coupe then the AUDI A5 sportsback is the best thing in the market. That things is not beautiful but its just hmmmmmm.....

I really don't think its worth it, Build quality and spec list should be the same.
if you not gona use the hatch function of the 4 series it isn't worth it imo, insurance and parts might also be more expensive.
but I guess the unique factor and looks do compensate for it..
For the same money I would rather get a 330d instead of a 420d..
