335i vs 330d vs 320d: What to get?

Not sure I agree with the statement that a stock 330i will be as fast as a stock 330D. Up here in Gauteng the 330D absolutely obliterates the 330i. Ask me how I know... Still love my 330i though...It's song is a lot prettier than any of the other options...

Like I said, a 330i is a confirmed panty dropper. :tiptoe:

I like to think that what the 330d loses with service costs regarding the 330i, it makes up for in consumption.

I think I need to do some research regarding performance enhancements for the 330i.

Nothing. It has no extra potential.

Chances are that modifications will make it slower and heavier on fuel.

But the 330i would still be my choice (out of the 4 you have narrowed it down to) if I had to maintain and pour in fuel out of my own pocket.

They are also not very popular, so chances of getting one for way less than your budget is good.

BTW - 335i real world consumption will make your eyes water. It makes a V8 look like a frugal eco metalist

A 335 in return will make the performance of a 330 look like its being driven by a frugal eco mentalist. :bin:

I'm hearing a lot about the 335i consumption here that doesn't make any sense.

With the 335i, consumption is based on how you drive! I got 6.9l per 100km driving down to Durban while sticking to the speed limit on stock turbos. I use to average 8.4l commuting around. And my worst ever was 10.2l when I use to plant my foot down every chance I got.

Even with the big turbo on the car I can still average 8.5l if I'm careful. The worst every full consumption was 13.1 when I used 50% Eth and drove like I stole it. That includes over 50 dyno runs and LOTS of WOT sessions.

Not bad consumption for a car making 550whp. So drive it like your driving miss daisy and it won't hurt your pocket. Put your foot down and it will make a dent in your pocket but it will put a smile on your face every time and worth a lot more than the few bucks you lost in the process.

KRS, dude.

I wish I could say the same bud. My stock n55 new engine currently sits on 15l per 100kms. Even before the engine was changed I was averaging 14 - 15.

The best I got going down Richards Bay was 10 or 11.. so I really really wish I would see your kinda figures.

I guess they not all the same hey.

I read through the entire thread of Arbee's old 330D and Karsh's 330D... Absolutely stunning cars they are!

Power, reliability and economy seems well packaged in the 330D. Surprisingly well balanced car. And the modding potential... :O

At the moment I think it is between the 330D and the 320D, depending on what is available at the time.

There is still lots of research to be done on all he models I mentioned, not necessarily for my decision but out of interest as well. I will start formulating a formal argument for the 330D and post my thought process here incase I get something wrong.

I think this thread will be great for other people, who are also facing this problem of BMW having too many great cars. Thank you guys for all the valuable information!

It depends WHERE you drive your 335i to be honest. Look around on your daily travels, people don't use them as a daily (well not many) ...

Open road yes the car flies and consumption is great. But as soon as you even think of doing town driving you can forget about it, If I get 300 odd KMs on a full tank I call myself lucky! The power is awesome and that's the price to pay.

This is in Sport+ in DS gearbox setting all the way, no point in owning a 335i and driving it in ECO then I could have just never bought it, my 2c. :coolShake:

To the OP, I honestly think the 330d will suit your needs, fully modded they are also a force to be reckoned with and I would think you would get about double what I get consumption wise now in town. My 320d used to get 550-600 on a full tank in town and 1200+ on the open road.

All this said.. My 335i is still my daily but I have moved so now I am so close to where I need to be the engine does not even hit operating temp each day.

Have owned a 320d LCI for the past year. All I can say is: really great car. It is reliable, fuel consumption is excellent. When it comes to performance vs. Fuel consumption, nothing comes close. But from what I gather, the 330d is a bit more special. More performance without the added fuel bill. So I would go for the 330d, but damn I like my 320d and I am not parting with it anytime soon if I can help it.

Hey bud, here's my take having had quite a bit of experience with most of your choices.

E90 330d 2005-2008 (pre-facelift) - I had a 2006 330d Auto which I bought on 120 000km, bought the car and drove it stock for about 5000km, it was a good performer but lacking something, so did software and following that downpipe, intercooler and straight through exhaust. Man did this change the car completely, it went from a good all rounder to a proper machine in conjunction with being an amazing all rounder. With the exhaust done it sounded mad, people couldn't believe that it was a diesel. I drove it hard and still managed 8.5-9l/100km with mostly urban driving. I sold the car on about 145 000km and didn't have any issues. If you buy one of these, some mods are a must!

E90 330d 2009 onwards (facelift) - My dad's had a 2010 330d Auto from new, and has now reached 160 000km. I've driven this car on a lot of occasions and it really has impressed me. The only major issue he's had was a gearbox issue around 135 000km which was a R15k repair. Everything else has just been normal servicing. This car stock is already a fast machine and we had runs where my dad wasn't far behind my fully modded 06 330d. He averages 6.5-7l/100km with mixed driving. As Karsh has said as well, do some mods to this 330d and it becomes a proper performer and will see off a stock 335i. This car for me, even in stock form, is the ultimate all rounder for the price.

E90/93 330i - my brother has a 2009 330i convertible auto - I've also driven this car a lot and other 330i's in the past, and as gents have said, the NA straight six sound is awesome, and if you live at the coast I would seriously consider it, but if you live up here on the reef you are going sometimes wish it had a little bit more, that's not to say it's slow, not at all, it runs well but another 25kw would make it that much better. And to get 25kw more out of this engine is going to be very difficult. He gets around 12.5l/100km driving nicely but his is a convertible and auto. As mentioned as well, if you were to choose a 330i, manual is the only choice, and you should get about 11l/100km average on the fuel consumption.

E90 335i - I now have a 2009 335i auto, I drove this car for about 3000km stock and it was an absolutely amazing car, fuel consumption was around the 10.5l/100km mark and it had more than enough power, it was quick! I did buy it however, with the intention of doing mods which I have done and now it is unbelievably quick! Fuel consumption is now around the 12.5-13l/100km mark as the power is addictive. I don't use it as a daily as I have a Ranger which I use mostly during the week.

E90 320d LCI - haven't owned one but have driven a couple, the motor in these cars is much better than the earlier versions and it goes really well! Up here on the reef you will stay with a 330i from pull away till about 140km/h I reckon, obviously after that the bigger engine will start pulling away. My friend used to average 7.5l/100km and he pushed his car.

Out of these choices, if you can find a 330d lci for around R180k or push your budget to R190/200k this would be my first choice, even if it's got 120k km don't stress too much. Second would be an '08 pre-facelift and then do some mods!:coolShake:

Thank you very very much for that post Ga-3M!

Very well put and not biased. You have given me something to think about!

I am most definitely going to do mods, regardless of what I get. ;)

I am already making a list of mods for each one depending which variant I get.

1st place at the moment would be a Alpine White, m kit 330D LCI. But I think this is a little out of my budget...

I have another question regarding financing on cars... I am getting a promotion end of this month, with a big salary bump. This makes the trade in possible in the first place. Can you get finance with lets say 1 month's pay slip, or do you need 3 like I needed with financing my 320i?

My friend bought a 200k car with Absa Vehicle finance with 1 months pay slip and a letter from his job stating he has the position and confirmed his base salary.

Excelent post.

I can comment on the 320d LCI, as I own one.

Its no slouch, but definitely nothing compared to the 330d LCI.

I had to choose between a low KM, newer 320d with MP, or a older 330d, without MP. My senses took over, and I went for the newer model.

Herco, I used to own a nice e46 m3 which I traded in for a e90 330D.

Keep in mind there's a different perspective on each car as it depends what you need/want in a car. Every car has its pros and cons.
Opinions from other people are nice to hear but you cannot buy a car because someone else likes it. He will not be driving it, you will.
Look at the cars that tick the boxes you like, test drive those cars then make a decision.
That's the only true way you will ever love the car you get trust me!

Just my 2c.

If you want to chat PM me I will gladly share the info I have. Also if you want to take a drive in a manual 330D come over for a visit.

Good luck in your pursuit to happiness buddy!

Thank you for the offer Peertjies! I might just take you up on that.

Do you have any performance goodies in your 330D?

Just a little update on my journey:

Called the bank this morning, and apparently you can get finance done with even just a 'dummy' pay slip. In other words if you signed a contract for a new position at a company, the company can write a letter to confirm your base salary and you can get your finance approved.

With all that being said, I might trade my car much sooner than I expected. But I still need to drive all those cars.

I drove an E90 320d last night.... What a fun car compared to my 320i. I was just a little disappointed that it only pushes you into your seat momentarily before shifting. Some performance mods might prolong that feeling on the 320d? Back to google! :D

Jeez, you guys will let me drive your babies? Thanks Spannie!

Come on 335i guys! Only way to get me to buy a 335i is to take me on a joy ride! ;) Im just kidding though.

I will make sure to drive atleast one of each before I make my decision. Now to look for someone in Pretoria/Centurion who owns a performance tunes 320d. Spannie is your vroooom stock?

No my car has a hollowed-out DPF and backbox delete, still need to remove the center box to get the sound though, and get a downpipe made up. I also have relatively mild Wulfchiptegnik software so I'm at around 240whp/650Nm at the wheels.

You're welcome to come around tonight if you'd like?

Im In centurion as well if you want a drive

And NO 330i will even come near a stock LCI 330d be it at the reef or coast.

Its a really hard choice between the 330d and 335i. I sometimes think of trading mine in for the 335i but the fuel bill keeps me from doing this. I just do too much mileage.
