335i rim issues

As a new 335i owner just want some advice please.

More than 3 people Ive spoken to have mentioned that the 19 inch motorsport rims I have on my 335i coupe are a major issue.

Because the profile is so low the rims develop cracks and tyres just dont last. One small pothole and goodbye tyre...

I didnt think much of this as Ive had 18 inch with 35 profile before and didnt have issues. My tyres on the 335i are 30 profile tho.

But this morning I got in the car and rear tyre totally flat...(Bear in mind I took delivery of this car a week ago). Managed to get it to Tiger
.They took the wheel off and showed me a large crack on the inside of the rim.Lucky for me BMW have agreed to replace with a new rim because there was evidence that the rim had been refurbished before.

So I want to know...am I going to have recurring issues with these 19'S. Are these mags prone to cracking?? A friend of mine said his sister had the same spec and also had similar issues with hairline cracks.

Should I rather go to an 18 inch with a higher profile? Was also thinking of just slapping on some knock off CSL rims cause why damage your expensive rims on these roads??

Definately taking out tyre insurance. These runflats are moerse expensive.

Have you guys had similar issues?

Yip, I had the same problem

I had my wheels fixed, took off the awful run-flats and bought myself a spacesaver sparewheel

If I change to non-runflats though that doesnt really solve the rim cracking story though..

WHat about just slapping on 19'S WITH A 35 PROFILE, non - runflat?Wonder if that profiel is avilable.

U dont lose MP hey if you switch to non - Runflats?

the rims crack for 2reasons,

1- the profile is very low

2- the runflats sidewall is super hard and doesnt flex

combine these two factors and when you encounter a pothole, there is not enough "cushion" for the tyre to absorb any impact, thus it passes all the force from the stiff sidewall into your magwheel causing it to crack.

I called Bmw Customer Care and i was told that you can change to non-runflats provided i accept the fact that Bmw has the right to void any claim that may arise from using non-runflats. You are also not entitled to Free roadside assistance if you have a blow-out or a puncture. You are welcome to call bmw to assist, but you will have to pay for this service.

I hope all this info helps, if not, please dont hesitate to drop me a PM

Thats a top notch response!

Thanks German_Spec! So the RF actually do lead to the cracking because of the stiff sidewalls.

I will most definately be shifting to non RFT and look at getting a space saver. Although most insurance companies cover you for emergency assist as well and can send a flatbed, but the conveniance of a space saver does make sense.

I had the same problem with the rims on my 335i Coupe with Bridgestone RFTs. I changed to Non-RFTs which improved the situation including the ride. However, I was unfortunate with the potholes and one incident, I regretted not having a RFT / lack of spare wheel. Also, I had to fight my insurance because the assessor claimed I was using non-standard tires. I won that battle easily.

Later, I decided to change back to runflats but used Pirelli PZero RFTs. The ride on these tires was much better than Bridgestones. It was actually comparable to the Non-RFTs I used.

I have a letter from BMW SA that states if I take the run flats off my E92, repairs wouldn't be covered by MP and they cannot guarantee the saftey of the vehicle thereafter...:thumbdo:

That sounds overboard. Ive heard them saying that if damage occurs as a result of not using runflats then MP wont cover...

There must be very few instances where one can blame normal tyres for something mechanically going wrong so this shouldnt be a problem.

But if they refuse all repairs thats ridiculous.
