335 coolant loss

Guys this afternoon I got the coolant warning when I started up. Filled a litre and the stalk in the expansion tank didn't move. But when I pulled up the stalk it stayed in position to indicate the coolant was full. Drove for about an hour home. After cooling down I checked the level about 3hrs later it is still full.

My concern is where did the coolant go to?
My understanding is that it cannot just disappear unless there is a leak. No visible leaks nor is there coolant on thee floor. No traces also on the covers that were removed.

I am also guilty of not checking the level regularly :hammerhead:

Could the level just have dropped over time or is there possibility of a big leak to lose so much coolant?

Having it checked out in the morning but just wanted to find out if anyone also experienced such coolant loss.

Thanks

I had a minor leak from the turbo coolant feeds. Also no obvious leakage or smell of burning coolant. Just a tiny leak that over time let a fair bit of liquid out (wasn't close to 1L in my case though)

With my personal experience the most common water leak was due to a hairline crack on the radiator.

My 335i would lose a 1L of coolant, i would top up and a couple of days later it would need another 1L, the car was on MP at the time and BMW found a leak on the radiator and the replaced it.

These car run so hot, the the water that leaked was not visible.

The wifes 323i also developed a water leak two years back and it was the radiator on her car that developed a crack.

Guys the car is sorted.
Less than 12 months ago the radiator, water pump and thermostat was changed.
The problem was the expansion tank cap and breather screw.

Replaced both, pressure tested and all fine again.
