Nice
what paint did you use?
I couldn't find Rustoleum, so I bought another brand (same brand you find the engine enamels in at Midas etc). I'll see how it holds up against stone chips. The surface area isn't too big so I doubt it will show chips too quickly.

Sprayon?
Decent enough
Chamberlains and builders stock rustoleum
I see Makro now as well

Yes Sprayon! It gives a nice finish, but the can loses it's pressure when there's still a decent amount of paint left in the can... If this starts chipping, then I'll get primer and rustoleum.

So last night I decided to take off the engine cover and inspect the air filter as some guys have told me it's a mission and most dealershits and workshops don't replace the filter...

Engine cover off

20141023_183200.jpg

The engine cover's sound-deadening sponge material has disintegrated and has gone in between the intake manifold...

Eventually I got the air filter out, it was filthy

20141023_191614.jpg

Inside of the filter housing, not too much debris in there, just lots of dust...

20141023_191640.jpg

20141023_191649.jpg

And a shot of the MAF (or at least I think the MAF would be behind this screen?)

20141023_191654.jpg

Here is a shot (with flash) of the filter with the sponge removed. The spongey cover was full of dust, so I chucked it. I hit the filter itself with my hand to get most of the dust out.

20141023_192047.jpg

And a shot of the filter without flash. I wonder at what mileage it was replaced, I haven't seen an air filter look like this in years.

20141023_192057.jpg

So tomorrow I'll do a complete service with new filters and fluids. If time permits I'll do the CDV delete and flush the brake/clutch system while I'm at it. Apparently the car was serviced before I took delivery, the pollen filter looks new, but I'm not gonna trust that the oil and filter was changed seeing as the oil level is at the minimum mark.

At least I'm getting the car sorted out now rather than later.

Oh and I cleaned the MAP sensor as well...

Good work Martin, the last change date is normally stamped on the filter if you want to see when last they changed it. Shockingly, mine was done last in July 2013...I am livid as the last oil change was done about 3 weeks ago.

So I will get mplan to do it when it goes again.

Loving the grilles bud!

Sal so maak! Ek gaan die olie na werk op top, dit maak my bang om te dink dat daar nie genoeg olie in die enjin is nie! :hammerhead:

Stunning car and good on you for maintaining the car! :praise:
Thanks bud, I am OCD about my cars, so having to do maintenance early on gives me a chance to see the inner workings and layout of the engine and how the systems operate. Tomorrow it's service day! Gosh, 8 liters of oil is a lot

Is that for the diesel filter bud? And thanks for the compliment on the grilles, I think it adds some definition and a little aggression to the front as opposed to the chrome.

Should take between 7-7.5. When I serviced my 530d which has the original M57 she took exactly 7 liters to the full mark

Great stuff, I'm gonna have to buy 10 liters as Goldwagen just has the 5l cans of the "ll04 BMW diesel oil".

Then the next service you only have to buy 5L... Personally I use Castrol Edge in the car, no complaints from me :coolShake:

That spongey material from the sound deadening disintegrating is a big problem on these cars. I had tried to get them to change my plastic cover over the engine because of the spongey material hanging loose and was worried it might get into the fanbelt and jam/break it or disrail it with possible damage to the radiator, etc., but they said it was a cosmetic part which is not under M/P.The fact that it was all over the engine tells me that the air filter has not been replaced in quite a while. Normally they replace the air filter every third oil service under M/P.
When I got my car I took the small plastic duct on the side of the filter housing off and wiped over the filter with my finger. It was black with an oily soot and I demanded they replace the filter the next time I took it in for maintenance and they did it under M/P.

Some pics of the service and things I discovered:

1. I can now change the air filter relatively quickly. Practise makes perfect.
2. The engine had about 7 liters of oil in it (remember I just topped it up with 500ml as it was on min.) So total capacity is 7.5l
3. The oil filter is super easy to replace, just like the VAG cars.
4. Prop the lower engine cover up when draining oil, as my oil dripped onto the lower cover near the end.
5. The fuel filter bracket is the most irritating thing ever designed. You need to fit the bracket while the filter is out to make things easier.
6. A service makes a helluva difference! I used Motul X-clean 5W40 which is BMW LL04 compliant.

Pics:

Comparison between the new and old filter. :fear:  This is why I don't trust dealerships or any other mechanics for that matter. Do it yourself and know it's done.

While I was waiting for the oil to drain, I removed the EGR and had a look at it. Looked really clean and what a pleasure to remove compared to the Polo TDI's EGR. Sorry no before pics...

I think the car is faster after the diesel filter replacement. May just be the fact that my butt dyno's calibration is out.

I'm not really fussed about having the spongey sound-deadening stuff on the engine cover, just strange that it disintegrates that badly. I'm gonna replace everything every 15000km and do oil every 10 000km for peace of mind.

Wow... Very nice and congrats. Loving the detail in your thread.

Happy km's buddy....

Thanks bud! I try to keep things as detailed as possible so that I have a reference of my history with the car. The more detail, the easier it is to keep track of spending, modding, power, economy, maintenance etc.

The car feels even better to drive now that the car has been serviced. This thing is a beast!
