330d major service, Oil type they put in

I just had a major service done on my 330d at motoworx randburg, they used Liqui moly 15w 40 semi synthetic oil, I am not impressed at all about this, they say this is within spec, I just did some research and it seems that most people are putting 0w30 fully synthetic oil or 5w30 fully synthetic oil.

Please can the more experienced enlighten me on what the correct and best oil to use on this motor is?

Thanks

Get hold of liqui-Moly and ask them. My car uses 0W30 Synth, but i changed to liqui-Moly (Which is a MUCH better quality oil than castrol, shell etc.) I don't know about the 15W, mine is 5W-40. If Liqui-moly say the 15W-40 is within spec, then Motoworx did you a favour! Liqui-moly is Far Far FAR better than the crap most places use. If your mileage is over 100K, then you should be looking at a 5W-40 atleast.

Google liqui-moly SA and call them. If they say it's good, then your car will be thanking you forever. Their oil has amazing anti-sludging properties and omits less pollution into the air. Liqui-Moly is gold where the others are soup! Don't stress, I think they did the right thing. (Besides...Liqui-Moly is double the price...that should tell you something!)

Na 15w-40 was completely wrong, liqui moly website suggested 0w 30 - 5w 40.

I went to another mechanic that actually had a brain and asked him before mentioning anything and his answer was exactly as the website said, so I got 5w-40 put in my car the next day, im happy as now the engine has been completely flushed the oil looks almost transparent its so clean.

Thanks for the help though

From what i know , no matter how many times oil is changed or flushed , new oil will always shows blackish in Diesels when checked , just saying.....

I have a feeling that the reason for that is the EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation valve) is pushing the exhaust fumes right back into the intake manifold which is causing the oil to turn black, I did the EGR delete mod as I got home with my new oil to test this theory, and my oil is staying golden. I could be wrong but the shit I found in that EGR valve was disgusting and it took me a good hour or so to clean it out nicely and then block it off.

I could be talking a bunch of shit I am not sure, its just a theory I have. Would be interesting to know what other forum members think, I had the service done around 3 weeks ago and the oil is still clear.

freaking hell....can you pop up some pics etc of how you did the block off etc....interested in seeing further into this....whats the pros and cons please

I don't think that in SA there are any cons. As far as I am aware it is there for emmision laws and it is good for very cold countries.

There are two main problems with the EGR. One, is that by allowing hot exhaust gas to pass back in to your inlet system you lower the effective combustion achieved, as an engine will always combust better on cold dense fresh air. Secondly, the soot from EGR mixes with the oil vapor produced by the turbo and forms a paste which sticks to the inlet manifold and ports and reduces the flow, in effect causing the engine to strangle itself.

The Problem With EGR
EGR has become synomynous with:

Poor engine running

Lathargic throttle response

Carbon build up in the intake system

Reduced power

Increases of black smoke under full acceleration

Pros - are that less smoke gets pushed out your exhaust when you put your foot down(I have actually tested this) and your fuel consumption drops quite considerably(I also tested this and it definately makes a difference)

Its a very easy mod, remove engine cover, and on the right hand side there is a valve with a vacume hose attached to it that is connected to your inlet manifold, all you do is disconnect the vacume pipe and block it off( I did this with a small bolt) Then take a small piece of silicone pipe which has been blocked off too and connect that to the valve where the pipe you disconnected went, then all I did was cable tie these two pipes together to the nosel of the EGR valve itself to make it look all neat and thats it, took 2 mins to do this mod if you don't count taking your engine cover off.

This is what a EGR valve typically looks like and it doesn't take long for it to get to this stage. (This can't be good for your engine to breath in).

Pulled some hose over the two open ends and put a screw in both of them. Just tied up with cable tie to keep it neat.

It cant be a 15W40.

It will have been Top Tec 4100 5W40, which is actually a BMW specific oil, made specifically for all BMW petrol and diesels and is one of the few oils in South Africa with BMW approved drain intervals of over 30 000km.

I can assure you that short of Mobil 1 whatever is in the car now is not as good as the oil they put in.

To add, you dont need a Fully Synthetic Oil in your car as the hydrocracked semi-synthetics have the same API/ACEA performance ratings as most Fully Synthetics and boast many many more approvals...

What did they put in the car, and what intervals are you draining at?

They definately put 15w40, he showed me the reciept and the empty oil bottles.

I now have fully Synthetic Liqui Moly 5W40 (it could be 5w30 Cant remember now) in my car. I won't be draining at the proper intervals as I Like nice clean oil in my motor, so I will drain and refill as often as I do my bike lol, every 6000km or less depending on how disgusting the oil looks within that time span.

The Fully Synthetic 5W40 is superb, and whilst I would go for the Hydro-cracked personally you will do well with that oil.

It has the latest CF diesel spec, however do NOT run this oil for more than 15 000km!

It only has a 1998 Longlife approval which is pretty useless.

Revival time!

I've had my 330d for a year now and want to change the oil again.

Since I bought the car I've done 11-12000km and My dad did the oil change while I was away in June last year.

He bought this Caltex Delo Gold 15w40 and there is still half a bottle left. So I was wanting to do this change with the remaining oil before changing to something else next year.

Or am I missing something that this is a horrific choice?

Thx

15w is kak i would not put it in my car... these engines are meant to run on 5w40, 5w30, 0w40 or 0w30

15w is really kak for startup protection...

A mechanic put 15w 40 in my car, I drove out of the mechanics house and drove to the next mechanic and made him put 5w30 in my car! Please don't put 15w 40 in your car you have spent far too much time and money on the car to give it ultra kak oil like that!

how good is Castrol Edge. just bought it this morning for my next oil change. its a 5W-40. I currently have a magnatec partially synthetic which I have driven on for about 3000km now. the car has a funny sound when cold. i once asked the local agents what oil they use when performing oil changes and the parts guy showed me a green container of Castrol Magnatec Professional, its only available in 1litre packs going for R75 . I am happy coz I got the perfect oil, thanks for the useful info guys.

Castrol Edge is not what the dealers use. They use Castrol SLX 5w30 which is very different to Edge 5w40. I have some experience with Castrol Edge and it is not a good one. I will most certainly never use it again.
