330D DAMAGED MOTOR?

So I have been having some problems with my 330D for some time now. Started with overly aggressive excede software &*^%ing up my injectors amongst other things. Repaired injectors at 13k.

Motor still was running rough, and finally packed up this week. My assessment was that the turbo had packed up due to oil on the intake, however some diesel expert assured me one of my pistons was buggered.

I Decided to open the motor. i started stripping the nose today and when i loosened the intake pipe off the turbo, i noticed the turbo spindle lying in pieces.

I'm going to open the motor anyway to see if there was any other damage done, even though i presume the turbo is the main culprit.

I agree

Was this osiris car?

In all fairness, you run the risk when you do software. If your car isn't healthy enough to maintain higher-boost then you shouldn't do software or you should service the turbo.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I hope you get your car sorted.

Yes it was Osiris's car. I'll post a pic of what the original turbo and internals should look like.

Vinnie your housing is original but your internals are aftermarket. That could explain the premature catastrophic failure.

Sorry to hear bro,

Just a question guys..
is a 'stronger or bigger' turbo recommended with software upgrade on 3.0 diesels...if so, what is recommended..

Just keen to know please, thanks

Sorry for your troubles buddy....

My personal experience with Diesal turbo motors have thought me a few lessons, main one is that there is no free lunch when you want power...

When a your slap a modified map on a D, your injectors need to be In a better than new state as any wear and tear on the nozzles allows the spray pattern to change from mist to drip... This also moves the flame front from the little cavity just above the piston where it is buffeted by a layer of air around it, to the face or crown of the piston, the second problem is the new tuned map calls for more fuel and boost to be compressed in the cylinder area, this raises EGT values naturally and combined with your drippy injectors is a simple recipe for disaster, this excessive heat slowly starts to wear holes on your pistons

Trust me, I know I have Burnt holes through pistons before...

I really hope this isn't the case for your car but it is the reality of the situation...

i just want to add that ive been running with an agressive excede map for close on 4 years now with no problems , and the last 9 months with bigger 530d injectors on top of that.

like kish points out there is no free lunch.. when you you start getting agressive with tuning a egt guage is a must. and dripping injectors will burn a hole in a piston.

this spesific car had previous turbo failures due to shoddy repair work, on top of known injector problems. so although engine problems due to injectors might be the case, i personally think it more likely that repeated turbo shrapnel through the engine might have damaged a piston ring or a valve seat.

might be a good idea to do a compression test before taking the head off?

From what I remember the turbo that was purchased was an original bmw unit, which developed a whine/siren like sound after it was fitted. apparently the issue was because of an unbalanced shaft in the turbo, your observation makes me think that something different happened:fencelook:

I'll post a pic to show what the compressor and turbine blades and locking nuts look like. The ones Vinnie has in his Original housing isn't original internals from what I can see.

Hows the drive train holding up? 320d stuff is holding up to the higher torque of the 330d?

It is Nick's old car. AFAIK the drivetrain is still going like a boeing.

Netercol and Kish thanks for the advice guys. Vinnie die manne het gepraat
