330 overheating

Hey guys

I had this issue this morning, orange temp light comes on when sitting in traffic, and after a couple of minutes it turns RED! I immediately pull off and switch the car off. Check the engine bay and water levels are okay, fan is still operational. So I'm guessing this is either thermostat or water pump issue.

Not going to chance driving her again, so will tow her to my nearest indie mach. (Roodeport)

Out of interest I've been phoning around for prices, best so far is R5 700 and that's from the agents. Nobody seems to stock the electrical water pump here. :thumbdo:

Can anybody suggest alternatives ?

Is it overheating, or just the light? Try a diagnostics first, maybe it's just a temp sensor?

I have ordered most part for the X from ebay, take express shipping and you will have it withing a week.

Howzit man. on the wifes 318ti the orange light also came on last week while driving
Common problems i researched were the overflow/expansion tank and sensor.
Check my post within the general chat section.

It could be a simple problem like air within the system as well.
\Suggest that you maybe try that out as its the cheapest and then work yourself to replacing items.

Seems this is becoming a common problem with the e90's.

The car is about 7 years old with about 144k km on the clock. So I suppose its one of those things. Had the same thing happen to my E46 a few years back. Luckily it was just the themostat.

You might be onto something here. It will be diagnosed later today to say for sure. But I notice if the light comes on, and I switch the car off and then startup again it goes away?

The coolant doesn't seem to be boiling over indicated excessive heat. But I don't really know for sure as I'm not very technical.

 good luck hoping it is just a sensor or thermostat.

Yeah that seems like a sensor to me? I could be mistaking, just don't use an elm to do the scan, they don't show you everything you need to know, just good for performance testing IMHO.

hey buddy

Had the same issue with my E90. Turned out to be the water pump. Tune Tech sorted it out. Replaced the pump and the thermostat.
