325i Shudder when pulling away

Hi Everyone

I just bought a 2002 325i individual. Its an automatic. has 237k on the clock. Car drives well and everything works. i noticed that when i am standing still and plant the accelerator there is an initial shudder and hesitation when pulling away. A couple seconds later the car moves and theres no issues. Gear changes are smooth and when slowing down the down changes are soft. I have never owned a bmw in auto before. Could this be a rear subframe bush or gearbox or propshaft? any ideas?

If i pull away normally there is no shudder and gear changes are fine as well. its just the initial pull away under heavy acceleration.

Do you have the + and - next to the gear lever when you put it into drive?

If you do then do the following to eliminate the possible's

1. Put car in drive.
2. Flick gear lever to the left which will put it into manual
3. Then push forward to put it into 1st gear or show M1 on dash
4. Remember that push forward to put car in next gear
5. Put you foot down and see if the shudder is there or not
6. Stop car and move gear lever to the right to put it back into normal drive mode

By doing this you will see if the shudder is there in 1st or not, if not what happens to automatics sometimes is they stop in 2nd and not in 1st gear. When you plant your foot, it feels like the car is throwing you forward and only then all hell brakes loose and your gone, the car has shifted into 1st and reved it. But it feels horrible when it does that if that is what you talking about.

Hope this puts you in the right direction

Is it only in first and from what RPM?

Hi there. Thanks for your reply. So its only in 1st gear and only happens when at a complete stand still and i launch the car. if i pull away and i am rolling and then plant my foot theres no shudder. So last night, in addition to this shudder which i am testing, one or possibly two ignition coils go. Car is doing the usual splutter.. the car was on a diagnotic machine and they picked up that coil 2 and 5 were faulty, but i had no shudder from the engine. last night for the 1st time that popped its head up. i drive home, switch off the car and back on again and everything is fine

so it looks like 2 ignition coils needed and possibly a prop bush or diff bushes?

Hi there

Thanks for the reply.
This happens in steptronic 1st gear as well as normal drive and sports mode. I doubt its 1st gear on the gearbox because i dont get this at all unless the car is launched with my foot flat.

i know with the e46 when you plant it, it shudders because of the traction control being on and the car fights for grip are you sure its just not that or a engine or gearbox mount?

Interesting comment about the auto's stopping in second instead of first. All the auto's I have had have only ever stopped in normal "d" in 2nd. They only ever went to 1st if you used the "manual" function and even then you need to select 1st as it is immediately in 2nd from shifting from "D".

I didnt think of that lol. I will try turning the traction control off and then test. On my car that would be the ASC right. This one never had DSC.
