Hi fanatics. This isn't a diy but just a bit of motivation.Did my front wheel bearings yesterday. Being my first BMW I'm wary of taking on certain 'diy' jobs on my baby. But to be honest if you're even slightly mechanically minded it's not that hard to accomplish. The only problem I encountered, (other than finding a 46 socket for the hub nut), was that , when I pulled off the bearing and hub, the inner race stayed behind on the steering shaft.
So I had to run to the flee market to look for a small 3 jaw bearing puller. The bentleys manual states that you need to remove the splash plate and replace the dust cover behind the bearing...i couldn't get the splash plate over the dust cover....It just wouldn't pull over.
Well I didn't have to remove it and the dust cover was still in great condition so I didn't bother replacing that either.
My advice is have someone help you with pulling the bearings off....just to keep pressure on the bearing puller, for pulling off the inner race. I couldn't get the jaws all the way behind the race but there is a groove in front of it to place the puller.
I used the 46 socket to tap the new bearing in place without hassle.
The whole job took about 2 and a half hours provided you have all the tools.
46 socket for the hub nut.
16 spanner for the brake caliper carrier.
6 mm Allen key to remove the brake rotor.
Big bearing puller for the hub/bearing.
Small bearing puller for the inner race,if it stays behind.
A hammer to tap the new bearing on.
Some common knowledge.
Good luck
