320i vibrates when driving above 120km/h

Hi fanatics,

I have a slight issue with my 320i e90 (2006 model) on 190k Km on the clock. It vibrates a lot when I drive it above 120 km/h. At first, I thought an alignment was the issue, took it for alignment but it still does the same issue. Someone told me that there's a problem with my prop shaft coupling. Could this be correct? I don't want to end up paying for things that are not broken, though I was told by someone that works for BMW.

He said he'd fix it for me for R700. Want to take it there as soon as possible because he is a friend of mine as well. But I want to make sure before I take it to him. If coupling is not the issue, can you please tell me what the issue might be?

Kind Regards

I could be totally wrong but I always thought it was wheel balancing when you get a vibration over 120kms. I would suggest checking that as well before you check anything more serious. My opinion though.

+1

Did you have your tires balanced?

If it is the Propshaft i would then assume you would have the vibration at the same rev point in all gears and not just at 120kms/h

Your front rims may have a slight buckle.

Thanks. Will take it for balancing this weekend and see if the issue gets sorted. By the way, do you have to ask for your wheels to be balanced when you go for alignment or is it done by default? Because it hasn't been a month since I took it for alignment.

You need to tell them to do it.

nope, u need to ask them to have it done, very few places go the extra mile to ask you if it needs to be done ..

vibration on the steering is generally wheels balancing
and
steering pull is generally alignment ..

Where I go I ask for balancing and alignment. If you just ask for alignment then they will do just that.

I would, as suggested above, start by having the wheels balanced, and I would take note when they are doing this to make sure that none of the wheels/tyres have run-out. After this, then consider the alignment and other things.

Hi there,

have the wheels balance and then possibly try to see if they can check for flat spot on the wheel as well, as this also causes vibrations at certain speeds

Could be balancing, allignment, or the mags is buckled. Took my sisters car for alignment a few times and when we checked the balancing they said that the mags were buckled

I have heard that if you have bumps/humps (the road kind), near where you live or work and go over them all the time, they can cause your alignment to go off quicker.

Start with wheels and tyres and work your way back to the gearbox and motor, eliminating every vibration element as you go,

So:
Check tyres are not out of round
Check wheels are not buckled or out of balance
Check alignment
Check sideshaft a and sideshaft bearings
Check diff, diff bearings
Check prop for out of balance
Check prop coupling for wear
Check main bearing
Check gearbox for worn components
Check clutch for uneven wear
Check flywheel

You will find something out of wack as you progress down the checklist.

Cheers
Nick

I had the same issue on my 318i e46. the coupling tore and I had it replaced. Since then it vibrated over 120kph. All i had to do was the propshaft balancing which cost me R200 and it was all sorted
