320i Touring rear window

My back window was working fine when I got the car and the other day after doing some shopping I wanted to open it to load the bags in the back and it just refused to open. When I got home I tried everything I could think of and everything suggested on all my Google searches short of taking it apart but I could not get it to open. I also noticed that the light in the hatch that shines red to the rear and shines white down is not working. I inspected the bulb and even replaced it but that didn't fix it.
Has anyone had any experience with something like this before?

How old is your car? How many km?
The constant opening and closing will wear the boot lid harness down to the point where wires tend to break, or at some stage the keys were locked in the car and the locksmith would have tapped into the harness to unlock the car, they tend to damage the wiring in the process. Fixed many e36 and e46 models over the years due to locksmiths damaging boot lid harnesses.

Is a 2006 that I have had for a few months now.
Would it be possible for me to check the harness if its easy enough? I would not want to go breaking anything else in the process

Look for tool marks or cuts in the rubber tubing the wiring runs in, without damaging the rubber, pull it back and inspect the condition of the wires and looks for tool marks on the wiring insulation, if there is a break its usually there.

It could also just be that the solenoid or the button has failed. A multimeter would tell you.

Start at the button and work from there.

So if I were to start at the button, how would I do that? Is there a guide I can follow to make sure I don't end up breaking it more?
